Beauty of the Week: Jahlecia Smith

palm rolled locs

When we saw Jahlecia’s locs on Instagram, we knew we had to contact her for a Beauty of the Week feature. The way she styles her palm rolled locs is so creative and the color is divine! We also have our eye on her wardrobe – her sense of style is inspirational!

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been locing your hair?

I’ve had locs since I was two years old, so my answer to this question would be more in the lines of why I decided to stay natural. When I was younger I used to always get teased because my hair was different from my peers and I used vow that when I got older, I would cut them all off. As I grew older I begin to embrace that difference and I fell in love with the originality of locs and its uniqueness. The more I became sure of myself, the more my locs became an external representation of me and my individuality.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I try to wash my hair every two weeks, and twist my locs every month. I do a hot oil treatment once a month as well if I am up to it.

3. What are your staple hair products?

I used to be more adventurous when it came to trying different products but due to buildup that can occur with locs, I realized that a simple routine works better for me. Some of my staple products are jamaican black castor oil which I infuse with lavender oil. Raw Shea butter oil, coconut oil and Jojoba oil. The products I use to twist my locs are a mixture of those oils and occasionally Nature blessings.

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

My go-to hairstyle is a bun. When the creative juices aren’t following quite right, I just curl my bangs and put my locs up into a bun. My second go-to hairstyle that I reserve for special occasions or when I want something “different” is pipe cleaner curls. They last forever, but also take forever to do.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

My Curls Understood™ moment would have to be when I washed and styled my hair on my own for the first time. Thats when I realized that I could achieve the look I want, and save tons of money in the process. It’s a great feeling.
