Beauty of the Week: Nia the Light

uk natural hair bloggers

Meet Ginny. Also known as Nia the Light. She’s a UK natural hair blogger on the come up. We fell in love with her big hair and even bigger attitude… we love her Instagram photos! Ginny shares with us why she chose to be a girl with curls, her favorite products and what it’s like to be a natural in the UK.

1) Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I decided to embrace my natural hair because I was starting to see myself differently. Even though I was 13, I felt that I wanted to express myself differently then other girls in my class. Throughout my whole childhood I wanted to fit in by having straight and “perfect” hair. I did the big chop which definitely had a big impact… I was not used to the frizz and texture. I’ve been natural for 5 years and it was the best decision I made, as my natural hair is a part of me.

2) Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I wash my hair once a week using Shea Moisture shampoo. I deep condition and sleep with my hair in twists with the conditioner still in it and a shower cap. Ew! I know, but the next morning my hair really feels moisturized and nourished. I style with Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner and either Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie or Kinky Curly curling custard depending on which type of look I want to achieve. I live in England and it’s so cold here – the weather tends to dry out my hair so I apply coconut oil every morning to my roots and ends.

3) What are your staple hair products?

Definitely Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner and Shea Moisture Curl enhancing smoothie. They both create definition and volume. I love how they both have slip so they work really well with my hair. I really dislike products that have a strong smell but they are both really gentle and I’ve been using them for almost 2 years now. Something my hair cannot live without is an Afro pick as it creates so much shape and volume for my hair.

4) What are your favorite hairstyles?

My favourite hair style is my Afro. It speaks for itself with its wild shape, the toned colour and the different curls. If I’m going out sometimes I’ll have one side pinned or I’ll fluff it out and make it even more bigger or crazier. That is something which I need to explore more as I do want to try more hairstyles but I just love having my wild hair out, it’s fun and unique!

5) For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

I wish at the beginning of my journey I was told that not every product will work for you just because others use it. This is what leads people to becoming curl product junkies which I’m recovering from. I also wish I learned that my own hair is unique. I wasn’t happy with my curls and I spend so long trying to get perfect curls like Elle Varner until I found out it was done by a curling wand! I decided to be happy with my own hair and just express myself.
