Why Shower Filters Are Worth the Splurge

shower filter for hair

Since coloring my hair, I’ve had to deal with a great deal of dryness. My curls would not clump for the life of me and my color would go dull in a few short weeks. The struggle was real. My hair was fragile, stringy and lifeless. Even though I was taking care of it, it looked totally blah.

I had heard that water filters could have shocking results on hair and skin. Once I discovered that even Devachan uses filtered water, I figured that must be the reason why my hair always looks better at the salon than at home.

Chlorine and other chemicals are placed into tap water to kill microorganisms and bacteria, and protect the water against outdated residential piping getting metal into the water. The added chemicals make the water safer to drink. All that’s great, but those chemicals can dry out your hair over time.

Unfiltered water was effecting the way my products performed… or didn’t perform.

I live in New York City and although the pH level of NYC’s tap water is around 7.2 (as of 2013) which is very close to neutral, the added chemicals in the water were causing my hair and skin to be dry and dull. Furthermore, the unfiltered water was effecting the way my products performed… or didn’t perform.

I took to Google to find a shower filter that would be easy to install and easy on my pockets and found the Aquasana Premium Shower Filter. After the first use my hair felt noticeably cleaner, softer, and looked more lively overall. My hair soaked up product better, leaving my curls more defined.

Although it’s a bit pricey, (the replacement filters will run you $50+) your hair will thank you. Curly hair can get costly, but the results are in—  shower filters are worth the splurge.

Before using the shower filter my hair was stringy, my curl pattern was significantly less defined towards the ends, and my golden blonde highlights were dull. After using the shower filter my curls clumped together, and my ends were much more healthy and defined.
