Use for strength not moisture

Shea Radiance’s Keratin Deep Conditioning Hair Mask promises “all natural shea butter that repairs, rebuilds & strengthens hair.” I received my two ounce sample with my We Are Onyx subscription box. Granted two ounces isn’t a lot and certainly I advocate using a product at least three or four times before making a final decision, but here are my initial impressions.

First off the product’s smell is quite strong and not in a good way… luckily the smell doesn’t linger after you wash the product off. I’d almost say it has a potent citrus smell but in looking at the ingredients there isn’t a citrus fruit in sight! Anywho, on to what matters…

I applied the product to my wet, kinky hair after washing it with Terressentials Pure Earth Hair Wash in Left Coast Lemon (love this stuff – check out that review afterwards). Once I’d washed off my mud shampoo I applied pretty generous amounts of the Keratin Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. Considering it was just a two ounce jar, I used all of it on my medium length hair but I think I was heavy handed and less product would have done the job.

I left the product in my hair for 30 mins and sat under my home steamer. I then washed the Hair Mask off – yes, wash days involve a lot of applying then washing off of things – now I could really see what was up. My hair tells me right away if it likes something. I should preface by saying that my hair has low porosity meaning it has a hard time receiving moisture due to its tight cuticle layers. So my hair tends to love products that add back that moisture and deep conditioning with heat helps the cuticle layers on my hair shaft open up. With other deep conditioners I’ve used the product would leave my hair feeling soft and fluffy. This product didn’t. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because perhaps this product was doing something else to my hair, something it needed.

The product is a Keratin treatment and Keratin is a from of protein. My hair is very protein sensitive so it tends to feel stiffer when I apply protein based products. That said, the ingredients list water as its number one ingredient and the keratin comes far down the list. All I can conclude is that this would be a great deep treatment if your hair is damaged or perhaps in need of a good strengthening treatment after heat application, sun exposure or anything else that disrupts your hair regimen.

I would definitely recommend giving this a try. At $18 for 12 ounces, the price is very reasonable.
