Kassala Holdsclaw

Kassala hasn’t been on the scene long but her great sense of style and big personality are already turning heads on Instagram and Tumblr. This Portland, OR native is hard to miss – her big, blond curls grab you from a mile away. But surprisingly she’s only been natural for 18 months. We wanted to catch this rising star before she became too big for us ;) Here she shares her style and beauty secrets…

1. What inspired you to start your blog/Tumblr acct?

I had always wanted to try and start a blog/tumblr. I just wasn’t sure what I wanted on it. I’ve probably started about five or six blogs and then deleted them. When I started doing more photoshoots I had a ton of photos I wasn’t using/sharing on Instagram etc. I thought this is the perfect place to show all the work I have been doing and to show off how amazing the photographers are.

2. Where are your favorite places to shop for clothes?

Thats a hard one because I’m all over the place when it comes to shopping for my clothing. I could honestly walk into any/every store and want something whether its a thrift store or a department store at the mall. Right now I’m a little obsessed with the local vintage shops around Portland, Or.

3. How would you describe your style in 5 words?

Hmm thats always a weird question for me to answer I’m all over the place. I like to try new things but on a day to day basis five words that would come to mind would be:

• very minimal
• neutral
• comfortable
• little edgy
• classy

4. What three hair products could you not live without?

When I started my curly hair journey only about a year and a half ago DevaCurl honestly changed my life. I will forever love it! I use these three products religiously:

• DevaCurl No Poo
• DevaCurl Ultra Hold Gel
• Tresemme Naturals Conditioner ( I go through a bottle almost a week)

5. Who’s behind the camera taking all those wonderful photos of you both?

It’s really just a mixture of people. In the last couple of months I have met and worked with so many amazing photographers from all over Portland, LA, and New York.

6. What was the last compliment you received about your hair?!

“Wow! (with huge eyes) Your hair is so amazing and so big!”

7. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!”)

It is such a journey! When I first started my natural journey a year and half ago I barely had any hair, the hair I did have was completely dead from hair extensions, flat irons, and weaves. I knew I had no choice, either take care of my hair and let it go natural or basically lose the rest of it.

My first cut from a Devacurl specialist made me realize if I actually took care of my hair it could be awesome. I used so much conditioner, coconut oil, and overnight treatments those next few months my life basically depended on it. When I went in for the next trim my curls just came alive, they felt healthier and looked so nice.

That was my I got this moment I was in shock that it could look the way it did. I said to myself “my hair is freaking amazing!” I knew I was never going back after that.
