So I have a secret. I love to wear my hair straight. Sure I love the natural life but occasionally I yearn to have straight tresses to switch my look up. Alas, relaxers have never been an option for me as my hair strands are super fine and the chemicals would burn through my hair. Whenever I get a regular or Dominican blowout, my hair has started to revert before I have a chance to get back to my car… and that’s in the Winter! I’m starting to hear about home keratin straightening treatments and their benefits.
Keratin treatments temporarily straighten the hair using a liquid keratin and aldehyde solution. Once applied, the liquids are sealed in with a flat iron. If you have a Keratin treatment performed on your hair it will last up to 3 months but there are some off-she-shelf keratin treatments that you can use at home. These products can keep your hair straight and/or frizz free for up to 3 washes.
The natural question – pun intended – then becomes, “will my hair really revert back?” The answer is “yes!” While keratin treatments contain aldehyde compounds in order to do the straightening, many of the aldehydes are naturally derived and less toxic than formaldehyde (found in relaxers). Aldehyde wears off progressively with each shampoo wash.
