I remember the Smooth n Shine product line from way back in the day. They were the go-to name brand for hair serums. It was all my friends and I spoke of we because we loved their serum. It made our relaxed strands super silky and soft. Today they have rebranded their line and now have various products that target the natural hair community. I stumbled upon their Smooth n Shine Curl Activator Gel while browsing the aisle at Walmart. I went to grab some Eco Styler Gel but I got distracted by the look and price of the Smooth n Shine Gel.
This gel comes in a 20oz container which holds way more than your average gel. Not only do they offer more but the price point is right on target at $2.57. What could be better than more bang for your buck!?. As naturalista’s we are always on the hunt for a great product at the right price point. So they nail it overall in regards to worth and value.
When it comes to ingredients here is what it’s working with Aqua (Water), VP/VA Copolymer, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone, Propylene Glycol, Carbomer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Oleth-20, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4, DMDM Hydantoin, Methylparaben, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Benzoate, Hydroxycitronellal.
As you can see there are some cones in this product but first up is water and aloe vera leaf extract. With everything you get some good and some bad.
The product says to use on damp hair when styling. I did use this product after washing my hir and applying my leave ins. For my style I opted for a two strand twist out. I like that it was a very weightless product and the consistency was smooth and nice to the touch. It was a struggle when apply because I truly felt as if I did not have enough product on my strands. If you are heavy handed then this may not be the product for you. One thing for sure is that you will see a small signs of product buildup.
My style held up nicely and did not feel stiff or hard when I took them out. I liked how shiny bouncy and defined my curls turned out. Overall I would give this product an 8 out of 10. Great price point, great shine, and great price point!
