Miss World Contestant, Sanneta Myrie, Makes History With Her Locs

Meet Sanneta Myrie, the Miss World contestant is making headlines for being the first contestant with locs. The 24-year-old doctor represented her native country of Jamaica in the 2015 Miss World Competition and whilst she didn’t win (Sanneta placed fifth), she’s being recognized for being unapologetically herself. In it’s almost 65 year history, no contestant has ever had locs.

During the question and answer portion of the competition, Sanneta revealed why she thought she should win the title of Miss World, saying, “My story is one of a little girl whose life was transformed with charity and love, and my quest in life is to give that back to as many people as I can and to inspire the world with my story, that no matter where you are from, your skin type your hair color, your situation — your dreams are valid.”

Sanneta says of her heir, “I lock my hair because I identify with it.” Earlier this year, Zendaya used her voice (and social media power) after ignorant comments were made regarding her decision to wear her hair in locs at the 2015 Oscars. The then 18-year-old’s response was so positively received, Mattel created a Barbie doll replicating Zendaya’s exact look. (It sold out.)

“I think people who choose to wear locs, Afros or big curly hair really no longer care what the discussion is from society,” Tippi says. “Having dreads is, for some, just a hairstyle choice. And for others, [it’s] a cultural choice.”

While I may not have won the title, my heart is still smiling. My aim was to inspire young women from all around the world to become the greatest versions of themselves…that’s the best victory I could have gotten,
