Heels Avenue

Naturals with a shoe obsession rejoice! In Heels Avenue you have a friend for life. You’re going to love this Concrete Curls feature. San Francisco based blogger Marti, like so many of us, has an affinity for heels and, well, or things fashion. We wanted to find out a little more about what inspires her amazing style. We love it when natural hair and fashion come together!

1. What inspired you to start “Heels Avenue”?

I think after following a lot of bloggers for long long time, I decided to create my own voice and have fun with it in the process I hope I inspire a couple of readers out there.

2. How would you describe your style in 5 words?

California cool, relaxed with a touch of sophistication.

3. What are your Winter essentials this year?

This Winter it’s been all about chunky cardigans and sweaters, cape and over sized coats for me.

4. What three hair products could you not live without?

Proclaim hair and scalp conditioner, Abba leave-in conditioner and argon oil for my scalp.

5. Who’s behind the camera taking all those wonderful photos of you?

Mostly my husband and my good friend, also an amazing blogger, Diamond Mahone. When I first launched the blog though, I worked with an amazing photographer Erin Prado.

6. What can we expect from Heels Avenue this coming year?

I’m working on launching an online jewelry store that carries some exotic hand made jewelries all made in Ethiopia. The jewelry ranges from wood bangle, to a tall rustic silver cuff to dainty stackable bracelets. I am also collaborating with Dallas based leather goods designer to create some leather jewelries- I am all excited about it.

7. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment? (The moment when you were like, “I’ve go this!”)

I can say I find my now signature hair style by accident. I decided to stop perming my hair because it was damaging my hair so I was in that in-between confused state. One day I was on the phone with a friend and I start randomly twisting my hair and by the time I was done with the phone it was too late to undo all that twist. So I decided to let it be overnight and in the morning I took the twists out and I didn’t hate what I saw. Of course it didn’t look as it does now. It took a lot of twisting everyday for my hair me get it right. Now I actually like my hair when I sleep on it for couple days. I just rub it off in the morning and I’m all done. It just gets bigger and fuller!
