Healthy Hair From The Inside, Out

healthy eating and hair growth

What goes into your body plays a huge part in how your hair “performs”. For beautiful and healthy hair, eat a healthy and balanced diet of veggies, fruits, wholegrain, lentils, nuts, dairy and organic meat. For lackluster hair, well, stay steady on a high-fat diet with little nutrients. I’m going to assume you want the former?

Exercising & Sweating

As little as 10 minutes every day! Yes, 10 minutes of exercise every day will keep you and your hair healthy and abundant. Exercise increases circulation of the scalp, thereby inducing the nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth.

Drinking Lots of Water

Divide your body weight by 2 that’s how many ounces you should be drinking daily. For me, 130lbs ÷ 2 = 65. Therefore I drink 65oz, or those 16oz water bottles 4 times, a day. It’s not that difficult to do. Sometimes I do forget, but the point is drinking just 2 glasses of water is doing nothing for you or your hair. A good app to help keep you hydrated is ‘Aqualert’. It’s like a game and a good reminder for drinking plenty water each.

Food & Diet Tips

Eat healthy vegetables like carrots, bell peppers and plenty of green veggies – the greener the better! You can’t go wrong with spinach, brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli, romaine lettuce etc. Beans, chicken, turkey, fish (salmon), eggs, whole grain (brown rice) are great sources of protein too.

Eating 1 to 2 tsp of flax seeds every day can help your hair grow faster and stronger. Make a drink containing flaxseed oil everyday to drink or add to cereal or your salad.

Sample Recipe of a Flax Seed Drink

• Cup of Spinach/Kale
• 2tbs Honey
• 1tsp Flax Seed
• 1/2 Cup Coconut Milk

Moderation is key!

Just REMEMBER your hair and nails are the last to receive nutrients from the food you consume. The body is clever enough to leave vanity needs last! Eating TOO MUCH vitamin A (like carrots, prunes, papaya, mango etc.) can cause hair loss so be aware. Sugar, deep fried/greasy, processed foods (boxed food, fast food etc.) can also stunt your hair growth.

For example, if you’re only eating 3 pieces of broccoli twice a week and 4 desserts, 5 bags of chips, 6 cans of diet soda or lemonade then your body will fight to get all of the good nutrients from the broccoli an your hair and nails will get just about nothing. All of the sugar and grease will completely block your hair from getting any much needed nutrition.

It’s interesting how going natural creates a snowball effect for a better you so think of your natural hair journey as more than a such for the best external products and put thought into the products you consume internally for the best results.
