Beauty of the Week: Melissa Burgos

Melissa’s curly fro is so luscious that we just had to feature her in one of our Beauty of the Week features. She’s has the most bouncy and fun curls – her sense of style is also on point. If yo haven’t checked out her blog yet please do. She has great advice and tips on how she keeps those curls so healthy.

1. Why did you go natural ? How long have you been natural?

I had my first relaxer at 13 and transitioned for about a year so that would be about… A LONG TIME! But I also big chopped after a horrible hairdresser experience in 2010 so I’m currently rockin’ 4 years of growth. As corny as it may sound, I decided to stop relaxing my hair because of Mel B from the Spice Girls. I thought we had the same hair and initials so it was a sign!

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I love wash and go’s! I try to wash my hair at least once a week. I deep condition and steam my hair during that time too. I have tried two strand twists, braid outs and even bantu knots but those styles don’t work for me because of my haircut.

3. What are your staple hair products?

Wash: Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Beyond Gentle & Sulfate Free Wash. If my hair is really dirty, I just wash with Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap (undiluted).

Condition/Detangle: Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Knot Out Conditioner.

Deep Conditioner: DevaCurl Heaven in Hair, Nubian Heritage Grow & Strengthen Treatment, or Motions Naturally You Deep Conditioner.

Style: Sebastian Potion 9 Leave-in Treatment and EcoStyler Gel (clear).

Seal: Ella’s Concoctions Holy Grail Oil and Quickie Oil, Josie Maran 100% Argan Oil (you can find it at Sephora), 100% Grapeseed Oil, or 100% Jojoba Oil (I normally get these from Whole Foods).

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

I’m pretty lazy when it comes to styling and I’m extremely tender-headed (who would have thought with all this hair, right?). So I would say it is a simple high messy ponytail with my ends tucked in.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!”)?

I stopped trying to control my hair. Ok, let me be honest – I had to let it stop controlling me. I’ve come to terms even ’til this day that my hair is going to turn out different regardless of if I’m doing the same routine and using the same products and I shouldn’t let it affect my mood. If my wash and go doesn’t turn out the way I wished it would it goes up into a ponytail. It’s that simple.
