4 Hair Tools for Thick Natural Hair

If you’ve got super thick hair like me then these tips will be heaven sent. My number one tip is don’t comb your hair on a daily basis. The thickness and volume of my hair makes it impossible to comb my hair daily. An advantage is that the texture of my thick curls and coils hold hair styles pretty well, so I’m able to just fluff and go. However, I do have to use hair styling tools to achieve my hair styles. The only time I “comb” my hair is during the detangling and wash day process with lots of product in my hair.

I only own wide tooth combs, afro pics and detangling brushes. I use wide tooth combs to section or style my hair. Afro pics are used to fluff and add volume to my hairstyles.

After I’ve fluffed out my dry hair

A good detangling brush not only detangles my hair without pulling it out but also doubles as a product distributor. My hair tools have to serve multiple purposes. I should be able to work out tangles and also apply products evenly.

I decided to compare some detangling brushes to my current staples. My new additions are “The Detangler” and the “Cricket’s Ultra Smooth Detangling Brush”. I compared the brushes on the basis of how well they worked on both dry (dry hair with oil applied) and wet (wet hair with product applied).

I pre-poo my hair with oil before every wash and detangle with leave in conditioner. I use a detangling brush to detangle and apply product during both steps. I needed to purchase new detangling brushes because my hair has grown in length out of the teeny weeny afro stage and I needed a brush that could handle a longer length of hair.

Detangling your hair properly is essential to healthy hair. Without detangling you run the risk of leaving shed hairs within your hair which will lead to more tangles and knots which means more hair loss due to cutting. On my past wash day I reviewed the following products:

1. The Detangler
2. Cricket Ultra smooth Detangling brush
3. Tangle Tamer (similar to a tangle teaser)
4. Michel Mercier Professional Detangling hair brush (For Thick Hair)

THE NEW ADDITIONS

1. The Detangler

curls-understood-the-detangler-best-styling-tools-for-thick-hairWhat it Says on the Box: “The Detangler Wet/Dry brush has soft, flexible bristles that are gentle enough for everyday use on all hair types and textures. Designed to easily glide through wet or dry hair, The Detangler removes knots and snags for smooth, healthy hair. Features an easy-grip ergonomic handle.”

On Dry Hair: This brush fluffed my hair out pretty effectively. However, my hair broke some of the bristles. It didn’t damage my hair but it couldn’t handle prolonged use.

On Wet Hair: I didn’t use it on my hair wet because I had already broke it. I don’t think it was meant for kinky/coily textured hair. If you have any 4 type hair, I wouldn’t suggest this brush.

2. Cricket Ultra Smooth Detangling Brush

A special blend of Argan and Olive oils and Keratin protein replace tangles with luxurious shine, smooth manageable hair. The perfect shower brush to massage the scalp and pull conditioner through hair!”

On Dry Hair/Wet Hair: I absolutely love this brush! It is versatile and can be used on both dry or wet hair. The handle enabled me to grip the brush as I used it on my hair. It was also very easy to clean. This is my new staple brush.

3. Plugged In Tangle Tamer

On Dry Hair/Wet Hair: It was very easy to use. This is an economical alternative to the Tangle Teaser.

I would suggest it for everyone. I have used this brush since I have big chopped. As my hair has grown longer, I mainly use it to distribute product during styling. It takes longer to use since it handheld and I have so much hair.

4. Michel Mercier Professional Detangling Hair Brush

curls-understood-best-styling-tools-for-thick-hair-michel-mercier-professional-detangling-hair-brushWhat it Says on the Box: “The Michel Mercier’s Ultimate Detangling Brush is the essential tool to have to gently detangle any hair type in seconds! Michel Mercier’s Ultimate Detangling Brush uses 428 different contact points simultaneously, reducing pressure and detangling your hair with fewer strokes. The perfectly placed bristles easily flow through your tangled hair like no other ordinary brush! *Smooth & Pain Free *428 Different contact points *Blue is for Thick Hair”

On Dry Hair: I felt like I was fighting my hair while detangling.

On Wet Hair: It works much better on wet hair versus dry hair. It allowed me to saturate my hair with my conditioner. However the plastic handle was very difficult to grip if your hands are wet or have product on them. I dropped the brush multiple times because it was so slippery. I wouldn’t suggest using this brush in the shower because it is hollow and holds water. It is very difficult to drain the water out of it. I think this would pose a cleaning issue.
