3 Damage Free Ways To Dye Your Curls

The countdown to fall has begun but before the cool temperatures and thicker clothes return why not ride out the last hot days with a show-stopping hair color or highlights? We’re talking ocean blue, fire engine red, grape purple or even big bird yellow! We decided to highlight (pun intended) three ways to color natural hair without damage.

All summer long we’ve witnessed on social media fabulous photos of naturals rocking their rainbow colored hues. Our favs include @RayChillster‘s aqua fro, @DFinney‘s fiery red, @Eclectic_Vibez‘s ruby red locs and @Mayasworld‘s atomic blue curls.

If your’re wondering how you can bring some color into your life without making your curls weep we’ve got you covered with three damage free ways to temporarily dye your hair. Read on sista…

1. COSMETICS

By far the most economical and easiest way to color your hair is using cosmetics, specifically pressed powder and eye shadow. If you look through your makeup collection you probably have a lot of unused makeup just sitting around gathering dust. Why not put it to good use and give your hair a temporary make over! Cosmetics will wash it out easily after one shampoo wash.

Lichelle of Baroness Countess breaks down how she achieved copper highlights on the tips of her curly mane. It looks fantasitc and washed right out! She use Shea Moisture‘s Pressed Powder to achieve the look. Their products use all natural ingredients so this method will be kind to your hair.

2. HAIR SPRAY

Colored hair sprays are better at providing fuller coverage as opposed to highlights. Plus they last little longer. The color typically comes out after 2-3 washes. The process can be a little messy so line your bathrooms and use gloves!

Mel of Rock Yo Rizos has a great tutorial on how to apply the spray and create highlights on your tips. Mel used Streaks N Tips Temporary Highlight Spray which comes platinum, gold and white.

BeesOHoney has a video tutorial on YouTube where she demonstrates how to use paper to achieve color in specific sections. Her product of choice is Jerome Russell B Wild Temp’ry Hair Color Spray which comes in an array of colors including pink, orange, blue and green. See below…

3. HENNA

Lastly, Henna has been around since almost the beginning of time. Henna is a green plant powder derived from a flowering plant. In it’s purest form there are three natural colors: Neutral Henna, Red Henna and Black Henna, but companies do add some chemicals to henna to create new colors for dying purposes. Natural forms of henna do not dye hair in the highly pigmented colors shown in the photos within this article. If you’re looking for a brighter henna-based hue, just know that it probably isn’t 100% natural ;)

Body Art Quality henna is considered the purest form of henna and will have the added benefit of strengthening your hair since henna contains protein. Note that the henna in health food shops is not always the purest. We recommend Mehandi.com.

The application process is extremely messy but luckily there are plenty of video tutorials to guide you through the process. We love Kimmay Tube‘s…
