Being Natural In A Foreign Country: Britain

At took me a while to love my mane. I stood out amongst many people everywhere I went. Overtime, I began to love each curl that grew from my scalp. I love London. It’s a city full of vibrant people and so many beautiful places. I live in a quiet, small town just outside the city in London. When I’m running errands I’m starkly reminded of my differences. Having natural hair in England is particularly challenging if you live in a smaller town.

That said, my natural hair has allowed me to connect with people. When I see a little curly girl or an older woman with hair that I love, I tell them. I remember the feeling of hating my hair growing up especially when all that was around me was straight and silky hair. They would get the compliments whilst I was invisible.

When is comes to hair products, London doesn’t have the variety I would like. Since I’m a natural hair enthusiast and blogger, I’m often sent products from overseas which is a blessing but once they run out, I am on the hunt to finding the basics. It’s always challenging finding the products I like locally.

I absolutely love the Tresemme All Naturals line. I think my hair loves it more than I do! It leaves my curls very moisturised and soft. I’m also a bargain hunter, so places like Savers in the UK are where all the discounted products are – I buy hair products from there regularly.

Being different should be celebrated and I feel the world is adjusting its attitudes towards and thus allowing people to be different – that includes us curly girl. I remember when I was younger, people in my class would question our differences simply because they did not understand them.

Accepting your natural hair is only the beginning of the journey. Meeting and learning from like-minded naturals is part of the journey. Social media allows us to connect with each other more than ever before so my aim now is to connect women within London together hoping that we can all celebrate our kinks, curls and swirls!
