What Does It Mean to Be Male and Natural?

The natural hair community is full of beautiful women showcasing their natural hair and all it can do. Us women have dominated the natural movement and many would be forgiven for thinking there weren’t men also doing their thing. But the truth is men for the most part have always been natural! That said Curls Understood™ thought it’d be interesting to get the male perspective from one of its chief representatives. Wolfgang Lisborg has some of the most gorgeous hair we’ve ever seen and he’s up on his natural hair care lingo. Read on as we discuss male natural hair care, dating and being natural in Europe as a child.

1. What is your hair routine? What are your staple hair products?

My hair routine at the moment is very simple. Instead of co-washing with Tresemme Climate Protection as consistently as I use to, I do are oil washes using either ORS Grapeseed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil or Cococare Moisturizing Coconut Oil. Before I exercise, if I haven’t already added oil to keep my hair moisturized, I’ll add a decent amount into my hair and make sure I rub thoroughly so that it reaches my scalp. Due to the benefits of coconut oil with it’s lauric and capric acid which are fatty acids along with Vitamin E. They penetrate my hair shafts going through the cuticle repairing it inside out keeping my hair from protein loss as it stays strong.

When showering I’ll add a sufficient amount of either oil and rub it through my hair as my hair gets wet. Using a vent, I brush my hair while the oil still sits on my hair. If by any chance my hair stinks or is dirty I’ll proceed to use the Tresemme Breakage Defense Shampoo and put a decent amount in my hair. After, brushing through my hair with oil in it I’ll just use some Tresemme Climate Protection to wash some of the oil out of my hair. Afterwards, I’ll add little bit more of either oil to work as a sealant keeping my hair moist preventing dryness due to the fatty acids they both include.

Lastly, I’ll put my hair in a bun, parted hair with two side buns, Native American banding style, or simply wear it out so it can keep its curl pattern because I’ve noticed that repeating some protective styles can in some ways stress your hair. And, no my hair isn’t extremely oily after all of this. Lol!

2. What are your staple hairstyles? Are you into all the protective styling?!

The primary one I love is the Asian bun (well I call it that!). It sits in the middle behind my head. Since my hair is a little over 3 years old now I part my hair with two side buns and this has been working well to keep my ends sealed well.

3. Do you still live in Denmark? If so, there a vibrant natural community there? Where do you buy your products?

Not anymore haven’t been there for 11 years I reside in Greensboro, North Carolina now. See it is somewhat vibrant here in Greensboro, ok maybe it is because I ran out of ORS Grapeseed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil and went to the Wal-Mart to buy it. Only to see that the “hair oil” aisle was literally going through a great depression, nothing remained but scraps. Lol! That’s not the only place I get products from there’s a beauty store that literally has the best products called Unique Beauty Supply Store off N Church St. I actually need to go there ASAP because I’m not sure if they sell my grapeseed oil there. Hopefully, I’ll get some after I do this interview.

4. Do you get a lot of attention in the streets of Denmark?

I did when I was a youngster, being the only “dark chocolate” kid around. Having a completely different hair texture from everyone else definitely brought question since everyone had sleek blonde hair or dark sleek hair. Now, in the States when I lived in Brockton, MA I got a very “accepting” attention since having hair gave you a sense of respect up there. Lastly, in Greensboro, NC it’s very “shun like” with a hint of “huh?”! Mainly, because I’m a complete contradiction being a “dark” guy with long natural hair, from Europe, and my name is Wolfgang! The struggle be real in these streets for a “dark chocolate” brother, lmboooo!

5. For many women, dating as a natural can be awkward… we have to educate our partners a lot of the time. I guess dating you would be easy! As a natural guy to you prefer to date natural women?

I don’t know how it could be awkward, you’re with someone whose “natural beauty” sticks out more than someone who tries too hard to change themselves. Hell yeah, first of all thank God! Literally, lol! Man, natural women to me are just the best type of women I’ve come across. I adore them so much. You see, natural hair to me is more then, “oh she has a bunch of hair!” Natural hair is something that expresses one’s love for their culture and is an extension of one’s character. Whenever I see natural woman, I see a woman who has accepted as well as appreciates themselves for who they are. Those are some of the biggest things that attract me to natural women.

I’m also attracted to women who embrace their natural beauty. Makeup and other things can enhance your looks, and don’t get me wrong I enjoy the ways they do, but I need to be able to embrace your natural beauty first. Coming from a strong West African (Liberian) background, culture is taken very seriously. So, when I come across a woman who not only embraces the unique traits of their natural hair but can also embrace their foundation (customs/ethnicity) that’ll always keep me intrigued.

Lastly, I love women with confidence! In the past embracing your kinky/curly hair was a major issue. Even in today’s time some still haven’t fully accepted natural women. But to be able to walk with confidence and appreciation for what you are and what you represent in a society that still neglects your unique natural beauty is powerful. That’s why I prefer natural women.
