Deep Conditioning: Changes to Make this Summer

how to take care of curly hair in summer

With winter firmly behind us and summer on the horizon, you’re probably wondering how to take care of curly hair in summer months? All you need to do is tweak your hair care routine so it supports the seasonal change. Deep conditioning is always the most important step in my regimen whether it’s summer or winter. The key to healthy hair during summer is strength, sun protection and smoothness! During the warmer months you should ensure that the following ingredients are included in your products. You can find some recipes in the Homemade/Natural section of the site.

INGREDIENTS FOR STRENGTH

The following ingredients are great sources of natural protein that you can easily find in your kitchen! Include them in your deep conditioners to optimize the strength of your hair.

Yoghurt: The protein content found in yogurt provides ample nourishment to prevent dull dry hair.

Mayonnaise: Protein from mayonnaise helps fill the gaps between your hair strands if they’re damaged and clings on to the hair giving it a fuller, stronger look appearance.

SUN PROTECTION

When deep conditioning in the summer these ingredients naturally protect your hair from UV rays. Sun rays can alter your hair’s color and and cause damage. You can mix the following ingredients in with your favourite deep conditioners or simply apply them alone and rinse out before styling.

Grapeseed Oil and Rose Water Mixture: Mix both of these in a spray bottle and spritz on your hair as needed to keep your hair protected in the heat. The rose water will give your hair a gorgeous refreshing smell. Grape seed oil naturally acts as a shield against sun damage.

Honey: Honey can give your hair that natural summer glow along with protecting it from UV rays! Apply some all over the hair whilst deep conditioning for some extra protection.

SMOOTHNESS

Frizz is something that most curlies suffer from during spring/summer so taking these steps are vital to preventing any unwanted frizziness.

Cool Water & Cotton: Always rinse your hair with cool water when washing, cowashing and styling. This smooth’s the hair shaft and seals it (as opposed to warm water which lifts the hair shaft – good for when you want products to penetrate the hair shaft ;). Follow up by drying your hair with a cotton t-shirt, as towels are rough against the hair creating frizz and fly-aways.

Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is amazing for soothing any kind of sunburn or scalp irritation. Aloe Vera is also a great ingredient to use for combating frizz. Put some in a spray bottle with cold water and seal your hair with the mixture as a protective final layer.

Incorporate some of these top tips into your routine and you should have perfect curls this summer!
