Perfect for Daily Use

As a relatively new natural, I’m always trying to refine and solidify a hair regimen for my kinky, coily curls. I had been eyeing the Hello Curlies line since their launch, so I welcomed the opportunity to try the Buttermilk Moisturizer, especially since I was still testing out daily moisturizers to include in my hair regimen. Here’s my Hello Curlies review.

Hello Curlies is “the first color coded curly hair system”, with 3 product lines to moisturize and define your curls (green for the curly 2A-3B hair, pink for the tight curly 3C and 4A curls, and purple for the coily 4B and 4C textures). If you’re not quite sure what your curl type is, their website provides a visual guide with illustrations and photos to help you determine which line is best for you. Hello Curlies products contain key ingredients popular among naturalistas including aloe vera juice, avocado oil, fatty alcohols, shea butter, and sweet almond oil.

When selecting a moisturizer for daily or weekly use, you should remember that “water is moisture”, and select a product, like the Buttermilk Moisturizer, that has water listed as the first ingredient. The moisturizer has a light, somewhat creamy consistency, with a very light perfume fragrance. The directions indicate that you can apply it to both dry and damp hair. I tried both methods during the two weeks I tested the product, and found that I preferred the damp hair application. When used on damp hair the shine and curl definition were much more evident. The dry hair method resulted in very soft curls, but with less shine, definition, and a little bit of tackiness to the touch.

The product indicates that it is a daily moisturizer, and I definitely had to apply it daily as the moisture provided was not enough to stand up to the cold, New England winter days and nights. Thankfully, there was not a lot of product build up from my daily use (especially when applying to damp hair), and I was able to go about 4-5 days before I felt like I needed to cleanse my hair.

Overall, I really liked the Buttermilk Moisturizer, and give it an 8 out of 10, as it did work as a daily moisturizer, did soften my curls, and it worked well with the other products in my regimen. However, I wouldn’t call it “ultra-hydrating” (as the label indicates) since I wasn’t able to go more than 24 hours without reapplying. I plan to hang on to the bottle and add it to the rotation during the spring and summer when the cold weather isn’t sucking as much moisture out of my hair.

It is also important to note that one of the ingredients is glycine soja (soy bean) oil, and if you have a mild to severe soy allergy, you may need to steer clear of use as soy bean oil is second in the list of ingredients.

This product is wonderful. Till today I still cannot find anything like it. I had thought I had 2 different hair textures. Wavy in the front, & curly in the back… till Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttermilk. With this product my curls pop & I am just curly all over. I got sooo many comments wearing this product. I have not had such a strong response since. I wish I could afford to stock up on this, because I would if I could.

The Transitioner’s Magic… has never worked for me. But, the Baby Buttermilk is on my Yes-list. This is a product I will always use!
