Hairstyles for Two or More Hair Textures

Hairstyles for hiding multiple textures

I’m someone who suffers from two distinct hair textures. Yes, I know, “suffer” evokes negative emotions, but in truth, that’s how I feel. I once had dreams of waltzing out of the shower with freshly washed hair, running some mousse through my strands, then going about my day while my hair dried into perfectly coiled curls. Clearly there are plenty of reasons why that dream is unrealistic, but I blame it all on my differing textures.

My Struggle

I have loose waves on the sides of my head and tighter kinky curls at the crown and nape of my neck. There is also a portion of hair above my forehead that doesn’t do ANYTHING but frizz and stick straight up. Oh and did I mention that if I run a comb (or my fingers) through my hair, the ends of my strands will NOT curl back up?

Unfortunately for me this means wash and go’s are out of the picture, but there are still a number of styles that allow me to blend my three textures and still enjoy wearing my hair out

I love the way twist outs give all my different textures a more uniformed look.

Hairstyles To Try For Blending Textures

Flat twists, two strand twists, even three strand twists (which are not just braids by the way), cocoon curls, flexi rod sets, perm rods and braid outs!

Out of all of the above, my go-to style is definitely the two strand flat twist. I love the way twist outs give all my different textures a more uniformed look. The twists stretch out the tighter kinkier portions and add definition to the wavy parts of my hair. For best results, I put in the twists before bed, letting them dry and set overnight.

I take out the twists the next morning, unless that day’s weather forecast includes 80% humidity, then the twists are stayin’ in! Even in a bind, I can twist my hair a few hours before a special event and still get satisfactory results.

Dealing With Straight Ends

Most of the time, I leave my ends alone. I accept that they don’t want to curl and move on. However, there are times when I want to give my ends a little bounce! This can be accomplished in a variety of ways but my favorites are three strand twists, or adding flexi rods to the ends of my two strand twists while they dry.

I must warn you that flexi rods can be uncomfortable to sleep in, but the results are worth it! After taking my hair out of either of these styles, I find myself walking with a little extra pep in my step (and my hair).

We can’t control what grows out of our heads but we can definitely try to have some fun with it!
