Beauty of the Week: Simone

hair is simba

We’re never at a loss for words at how beautiful the natural community can be but Simone aka @HairIsSimba truly has us speechless. As her social media handle suggests, her hair is lioness-esque and purposeful. It’s easy to see why the London-based blogger and vlogger, of Irish and Jamaican ancestry, has a strong career in presenting, acting, modeling and working in the Marketing and Public Relation industries. We caught up with her to see how she keeps her curls camera ready…

Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I used to relax my hair regularly, then one time out of nowhere it all broke off. So at the age of 17 I started embracing my natural hair. I began my natural journey in 2008 when there wasn’t much information out there to educate myself on how to take care of my curls. Everything was all about relaxers and straightening. It’s been a fun journey but I was all by myself.

Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

Less is more and consistency is key. I shampoo my hair once a week. I condition every 3-4 days depending on how much I’ve been doing with my hair within the week. I deep condition once a week with cling film wrapped around my hair and then I pop under my soft hooded dryer. And every 4-6 weeks I do a protein treatment.

I stick to a product for at least 6 weeks. I don’t swap and change products throughout the month as my hair doesn’t take to it very well.

What are your staple hair products?

At the moment I’m loving…

tgin’s Honey Miracle Hair Mask Deep Conditioner: It has great slip; smells so good; and I don’t have to use too much. I have a lot of hair!!!
Mrs Millis’ Leave In Sweetness Shea Hair Butter (Vanilla & Strawberry): It’s vegan friendly and I love natural brands from my home city of London.. gotta support :)
ORS Curls Unleashed’s Sulfate Free Shampoo: This shampoo is so soft and and feels as if it’s conditioning my hair. Love it!

What are your favorite hairstyles?

When it comes to styling, I keep it simple but for special occasions you might see me do a slicked up bun, a twist out style or a braided style.

What was the last compliment you received about your hair?!

Can I just take your head and have you as my pillow!!!!

For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

You will be sure to go through the product junkie stage. You will turn to the relaxer or straighteners and think I can’t do this!

But despite the frustration and endless search for a good product, it will get easier! Anytime I have my frustrating days I say to myself, “my hair just needs extra TLC”. I don’t think of natural hair as hard work – just more love and time spent on myself!

I knew “I’d got this: when everyone started asking me how to go natural. I was like “YES! i’m doing something right”. Let’s do this girls. Let’s embrace our natural hair. I’m so pleased to have inspired and helped family and friends along the way.
