Beauty of the Week: Reyna

curly hair crush

Reyna Noriega, a 21 year old Miami native, has the the of curly hair that makes you stop on the street and stare. It doesn’t hurt that her style is amazing too! As a photographer Reyna currently has a body of work that consists of events, models, and portraiture but the real talent in front of the camera is Reyna herself as you’ll see in her photos below…

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

Severe color, heat, and chemical damage had my once thick hair very dry and lifeless. It was time to make change.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

• I use shampoo as I feel is needed which is usually twice a month. To keep my roots clean I use a coconut oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil mix. The peppermint helps to open hair follicles and free them of dirt and buildup which helps my hair grow.
• As soon as I’m unhappy with a style I will do a cowash (up to 3 times a week).
• On Sunday is wash day and it’s a real deal wash day meaning i’ll spend a large chunk of the day washing and deep conditioning. It’s relaxing for me.

3. What are your staple hair products?

• Whole Foods Hydrating Tea Tree Conditioner
• Coconut Oil
• Shea Moisture Products
• Eco Style Gel

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

My favorite hairstyles are my two afro puffs or one big puff! I like to keep it super simple.

5. What was the last compliment you received about your hair?

People are constantly telling me they love my hair and color and wish they had hair like it no matter how crazy and frizzy I think it looks.

6. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

Honestly I am still learning a lot. My routine has definitely gotten quicker and I realized that I do not need as much product to style my hair, less is more. The LOC method is what works best for my 3c/4a hair. If you can find a way that works best for you as far as preserving a style for more than one day you will definitely do yourself a favor.
