Trimming Curly Hair at Home

trimming curly hair at home

Am I the only one that refuses to pay a significant amount of money for a trim? Previously, I would not dare try to trim my own hair in fear that I would not cut it the proper way or cut too much off, but I educated myself enough that I felt comfortable and confident to save money and effectively give myself a trim.

In addition, I’ve also watched my stylist give me the big chop and brush the ends. I believe there is a certain time to cut hair, what to use or not to use on your hair before you cut it, what tools to use while cutting your hair, how you cut your hair and how much you should cut off depending on the look or length you are going for.

First and foremost, research and educate yourself! Do not cut your hair until you feel you have received enough information and can refer to a video, book, or site that helps you cut your hair.

Also, it might not hurt if you refer to more than one source just to check and see if information is repetitive – that way you’ll know your source is accurate in what it is presenting. I read a lot of information from natural hair communitY sites, boards, and viewed videos to I actually saw the demonstration and process of how to cut curly hair.

One of the first things I learned was that it was really important to invest in the proper tool to cut your hair – scissors. The type of scissors you use will definitely make or break your hair from this point on. I was told that hair scissors would be an investment, but I found that was not true. There are hair shears that can be purchased from superstores to hair salons, some more expensive than others, but at this point it is your preference on how much you would like to spend on hair shears. I found hair scissors, by Goody at Walmart for no more than $10.

Once I found the right pair of scissors I was ready for the process of cutting my hair. It is definitely easier to trim hair in sections. I find that the more sections there are, the better. I think it is also important to mention that this process should not be rushed. You want to make sure your trim is done properly and efficiently in order to get the best results possible; I usually opt for 6-8 sections.

After this step, depending on whether you are aiming for a routine trim or want to cut off a significant amount, start small and work your way up the section. I have researched and found that it is better to trim one “loop” or “C” to start out. I like this method because you do not have to worry about whether or not you are cutting off too much of a certain number in length; every curl gets one “loop” or “C” trimmed. This method was so easy to follow!

Now, I feel more comfortable trimming my hair when it is needed, on my own, rather than spending a ridiculous amount of money.
