7 Tips that Work for Thick Curly or Wavy Hair

thick wavy hair care

Having thick hair is a great asset. Many men and women worldwide spend a lot of time and energy finding ways to thicken their own hair. Growing up I was very aware, even from a young age, that I had thick hair. I definitely didn’t see it as beneficial and there was a constant battle between my hair, my time and the detangling comb. My mother and I always joked about how many afro combs had snapped in my hair. Well if I’m honest with you, at the time of combing, there wouldn’t be much laughter. I would actually be screaming for mercy. So I relaxed my hair to make things “easier”. It wasn’t until I went natural in January 2014 that my thickness made a return appearance and I have been overjoyed ever since.

So here are my tips for thick curly or wavy hair care:

• Thick hair tends to be especially strong, which means that it contains more protein in its cortex compared to finer hair. It’s this nutrient that gives you strong hair and reduces breakage

• Thick hair has volume therefore styling doesn’t require much manipulation

• Thick hair gives you countless hairstyling options

Admittedly, having thick hair is no walk in the park. It requires a certain level of attention and dedication that should be maintained at all times. If you want to continue being a voluminous vixen be prepared to work. But don’t worry, follow these simple tips for your thick Curly or Wavy hair and and watch your hair prosper.

Keep Your Hair Stretched

By keeping your curls stretched (especially at the roots), this will stop your hair from coiling on itself. You will be thankful for this when it comes to detangling as it will make the process a lot easier.

Work in Sections

Having thick hair can only mean one thing… more product application is required! In order to make sure you are applying your products in the best way possible, work in sections. If you simply rub the products through your tresses in one or two swoops, this will not result in an even application. The top layers will benefit from the coating but the majority of your thick hair in between and underneath will remain untouched. Simply section your hair into parts and apply your products evenly section by section.

Use a Cotton T-shirt as Opposed to a Towel to Dry Your Hair

Simply switching from using a towel to a cotton t-shirt can make such a difference to your thick hair. The fibres in towels are a lot more coarse than a t-shirt. When you’re rubbing your hair with the towel, the friction of these coarser towel will cause your thick hair to snag, frizz and lose its curl pattern over time. By using a t-shirt, you will still soak up all the excess water and it’ll be gentler on your hair.

Cleanse and Detangle Thoroughly

Be sure to cleanse and detangle thoroughly from root to tip. Having thick hair can mean your scalp will produce more sweat. If you fail to detangle thoroughly and miss the roots, your hair could result in becoming matted at the top with the mixture of products, oils and sweat.

Apply Moisture

The more hair you have, the more moisture it will need. Think of a sponge, the larger the sponge, the more it will soak up liquid. If you have thick hair, make sure you keep it moisturised daily. This will stop it from drying out and breaking.

Use the Correct Styling Tools

Be realistic when choosing the correct styling tools for your thick hair. Using a thin toothed comb on thick hair is not going to achieve the best results. It will be a struggle to comb your thick hair and could even result in breaking your hair. Instead, opt for a wide toothed comb, tangle teezer or Denman Brush.

Have Patience

Whether you’re planning on doing twists, a braid out or letting your hair dry naturally, remember that thick hair is going to take longer to achieve the end result – you have to wait up to twice as long for the hair to dry and set. Yes this can be frustrating at times but just be sure to set aside extra time. The end results are always worth it. Plus, your styles will last longer.
