Beauty of the Week: Samantha Pollack

thick curly hair tips

As a little girl from the Netherlands Samantha always looked up to women who took care of their natural hair. “I was always amazed when I saw women with long natural hair,” says Samantha. Via her brand J’adore My Curls her mission is to empower women worldwide to grow out their relaxed hair and embrace their curls. We’ve enjoyed watching Samantha’s hair flourish on YouTube and Instagram so we’re honored to feature her as a Beauty of the Week.

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural since 2007. The first time I relaxed my hair was when I was 14 years old. I thought I was prettier with long and straight hair. I relaxed my hair for 2-2.5 years. Then I discovered flat ironing! I thought: “why should I use chemicals if I can get my hair straight by using the flat iron?” Since then I have not used chemicals on my hair.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I start by rinsing my hair. Then I apply the Texture My Way conditioner. I then comb it through my hair gently from the end to the roots. I then rinse out the conditioner and wrap a t-shirt over my head. When it’s 75% dry I apply the Texture My Way Detangler; Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk & Amla Oil or Coconut oil. After this I let my hair air dry. When my hair is completely dry I pineapple it. The next day I take my hair out, fluff and pick my hair out and I’m good to go.

My Wash n Go lasts four days. On wash day I repeat the above routine. I only add the Nothing but clarifying Shampoo by Soft n Free on my ‘ Wash day’ regimen. My wash day is every two weeks.

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

Wash n Gos are my favorite go-to hairstyle. Next to the wash n go, I love the Pineapple and a classic high bun.

Be confident with your natural hair. Some people will talk negatively about your hair, but don’t let these words break you.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

I did compare my hair a lot with celebrities and other girls. I was jealous of girls who had long curly hair. At that time I wished my hair could grow faster. At some point I stopped comparing my hair with others. I just let my hair do her own thing.

My favorite quote is, “The hair is the richest ornament of women” -Martin Luther King. I love this quote so much. If my hair looks great, I feel great! My natural hair makes me feel confident. I will never permanently straighten my hair with chemicals again. I would never straighten my hair because of what other people think or expect – I do it for me. Be confident with your natural hair. Some people will talk negatively about your hair, but don’t let these words break you. Don’t compare your hair with others however difficult this might be.
