The Love On Top

Sometimes it’s we just need to mix it up. Puffs, twist outs and buns are fine and all but a girl needs options, right? So while we were doing our daily peruse of natural hair blogs and street style based Tumblr’s we noticed a new hair trend emerging. A glorious updo for natural hair that mixes a chic up-do with a classic puff and a dash of funky pompadour.

We’re affectionately calling it “The Love On Top!” It’s perfect for summer days and surprisingly it works for night time too. Don’t believe us? Just check out celeb naturals Thandie Newton and Janelle Monae (rocking it with pressed hair) on the red carpet. As you can see from the gallery, the style also works for multiple textures. If your hair is short, consider adding extensions to the front section for extra drama.

TUTORIAL

1 You can achieve this style on freshly washed hair or stretched hair from an old twist out.
2 Section off the front part of your hair for the puff/pompadour – about 1/4 of your hair.
3 If you’re wearing a puff at the front use a hair tie to secure the puff.
If you’re creating a bun, use bobby pins to secure the bun until it’s a shape you like.
If your hair is straight, create a pompadour by folding the hair back onto itself a la Janelle Monae.
4 Tuck and roll the remaining 3/4 of your hair using bobby pins (see photos below) or just pull your help up and secure it with a bobby pin – like you’re going to make a high ponytail.
