The Curly Girl Diaries

Music Pete Monsanto has worked with celebrities such as Kanye West, Marsha Ambrosius, Miguel and Elle Varner and he’s had much success. But everyone needs a new challenge, right? Looking for way a to celebrate Black women, especially having worked so closely to the hip-hop world which tends to degrade us, Pete started “Black Girl Sundays” on his Instagram account. He’s one of our natural hair photographers to watch. Every Sunday Pete takes photos of regular black women and posts them on Instagram.

Pete soon noticed that most of the women he would featured were natural… a complete coincidence. That formed the basis of the Curly Girl Diaries. His first official photos for the project were of Rene / Own By Femme and they went viral. Rene’s instagram account shot up from 500 to 13k followers (@OwnByFemme)! I’m sure you’ve seen her photos all over the internet. Watch the exclusive video Pete created of Curls Understood™ where he explains further how the project developed into what it is today…

And here’s the first episode from the Curly Girl Diaries series featuring Mel Burgos of Rock Yo Rizos. Be sure to follow Pete on Vimeo.
