Summer’s finally here! And with summer comes heat and lots and lots of humidity. Our curls weep! But dry those tears. Curls Understood’s summer survival kit will keep your hair healthy, happy and frizz free. Oh, and we’ve also got your vacation needs covered. Thank us later.

Stay hydrated…

Drink approximately 8 cups of water a day. Hydration is just as important internally as it is externally… your hair intakes water from both sources. This is especially important when on vacation to hotter climates, your body will sweat out a lot of your body’s water supply. When you spritz your hair with water (or at the very least a water-based product), be sure to seal it in with your favorite natural oil.

Leave-in conditioner is your friend…

Leave-in conditioners, both creamy and liquid, are great for replenishing the hair with moisture and taming frizz. They also provide a quick treatment after your curls have been exposed to the sun (for a more thorough treatment from the sun, keep up with regular deep conditioning treatments).

Cleanse that sea salt away…

Whether you’re hanging by the pool of diving into the ocean, after your hair’s been exposed to elements such as seas salt or chlorine your hair will need to be washed. Co-washing won’t cut it either. You’ll have to use real shampoo or even clarify (though depending on your hair type regular shampoo may suffice). Shampooing your hair will get rid of all that excess salt and chemicals leaving your hair ready for styling.

Colored hair needs extra love…

Sun exposure can fade and lighten color treated hair. Hair that has been dyed permanently, and in a lighter color, is especially vulnerable to damage because the hair cuticle has through quite a bit of trauma. Sun exposure will only add to the dryness. To protect your hair from fading and dryness, deep condition using a product specially formulated for color-treated hair.

Fight back that humidity…

Straight naturals will especially feel the struggle when it come to summer heat in more humid climates. To combat possible frizz be sure to incorporate steam treatments into your regimen throughout the summer. The more hydrate your hair is the less moisture it needs to draw from the air. Also follow our first tip drink plenty of water. Products that contain keratin can also help keep frizz at bay. See our top choices.

Embrace headscarves…

When all else fails embrace the glory and convenience of the headscarf. It’ll protect your hair from over exposure to the sun and headscarves add a nice twist to any outfit!
