Secrets des Soeurs

Thaina and Patrice Madere are sisters with impeccable style. Born and bred in Boston, Massachusetts but residing in Southern California, they launched the fashion, lifestyle, street style and curly hair blog Secrets des Soeurs (which means sister’s secrets in French). Their Haitian roots were the inspiration for the blog’s name. Get inspired by their classic, chic and covetable style.

1. What inspired you to start your blog “Secrets des Soeurs” together?

We’ve always wanted to work on some sort of creative project together and the blogosphere seemed like the perfect place to do so. We both receive comments/questions about hair, beauty and fashion so we thought why not develop a platform where we could introduce ourselves as a unit to those that are interested in hearing it. We also wanted somewhere to document our hair/ style moments and inspire while being inspired.

2. Where are your favorite places to shop for clothes?

Thaina: I ‘m a sucker for novelty pieces in vintage and thrift shops. I’ll stop on each and every corner pursuing unique/ timeless, quality goodies. When shopping online I go for BCBG, ASOS, Nastygal, Missguided and Zara.

Patrice: I live for shopping online. However, I’m also very frugal so I research the most reliable and inexpensive websites to shop at, a few of my favorites are Asos, Dresslily and Nastygal. The quality of their clothing is also pretty great too.

3. What three hair products could you not live without?

Thaina: I’d have a dry, brittle mess without my staples! My hair loves coconut oil and Shea moisture’s curl enhancing smoothie. I incorporate those two products weekly. I also make a spray mix of water, glycerin and peppermint oil and use that when I feel my hair needs hydration. When my ends need special attention I trim and make sure to seal with raw Shea butter. My hair screams thank you for that stuff.

Patrice: Honestly, I hate taking care of my hair. My schedule doesn’t allow me to make time to braid my hair every night so I usually wear weaves or braids. When I do wear my natural hair out I usually ask my sister to make me her custom hair spray blends. It’s usually made with the raw stuff; coconut oil, olive oil and Shea butter.

4. Who’s behind the camera taking all those wonderful photos of you both?

Thaina: My boyfriend! Samuel Blot (@samuelblot on Instagram). Isn’t he Amazing!? His journey as a photographer actually started because I told him we’d need someone to take our pictures and he wanted to support.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!”)?

Thaina: I can’t recall a specific time but I know that my Curls Understood™ moment happened when the comparisons to other curly beauties stopped. I realized that my curls were unapologetically beautiful and my hair journey is my own.

Patrice: I don’t think I ever had a moment where I didn’t think “I got this” The most important women in my life (my sister & mother) are natural and very comfortable with it. I guess that led me to believe that if they can rock it, I can too. My family’s opinion is what really drives me and I receive nothing but words of affirmation that my natural is beautiful from my father, mother and sister. They actually hate when I wear weaves. hehe.

6. What can we expect from Secrets des Soeurs in 2015?

Well we will just have to wait and see, won’t we? *wink wink* ;-)
