Beauty of the Week: Selene Rosenberg

curly wavy hair

Selene’s Instagram page is super cute. She chronicles all her curly wavy hair styles including the wackier ones but it serves as total inspiration. If you have Wavy or curly hair then learn from Selene what products work best for long envious curls that don’t frizz.

1. How long have you been wearing your hair in its curly/natural state?

Pretty much always. In middle school or maybe early high school I would sometimes flatiron my hair, but it’s not a slow process and not something I consider worth losing sleep over.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I shampoo about twice a week, and condition almost every time I shower. If I have time, I’ll do an in-shower deep conditioner maybe twice a month. I almost never brush or comb my hair—I just finger comb in the shower. I’m always showing up places with wet hair because it’s less frizzy when I let it air dry. Winter is difficult.

3. What are your staple hair products?

Devachan products work great for me (I even bought them for my curly-haired dad and brother!) I use the No-Poo cleanser, DevaCurl One Condition, and the DevaCurl Light Defining Gel on the regular. I’ve recently used the DevaCurl Mist-er Right to de-frizzify my already dry curls and help them stay for a couple events, and was happy with the results.

Sometimes I’ll mix up my hair product routine with something from Miss Jessie’s or Ouidad. Right now I’m really into Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls or Pillow Soft Curls.

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

I almost always just wear my hair down with a side part after showering and then just see how my hair behaves from there. If it’s getting wild, I put it up in a bun or a side-pony, the bigger the better. For special occasions, I’ll usually do half pulled back with a braid, or a french braid that wraps from one side of my head to the other. The great thing about curls is that braids really stay in, so this is my go to for dancing.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

I definitely struggled. For starters, it wasn’t curly until I was about 13, and I get my curls from dad, so my family really didn’t know what to do with my hair. It was pretty out of control until my junior year of college, to be honest, when a curly-haired classmate laid out the basics of using product, not touching while drying, no brushing or combing after the shower. It seems so simple, but it really helped me be more confident and embrace my curly hair.
