Recycle Your Old Hair Products

It’s time to have a deep and meaningful conversation about one of the huge problems we curly girls suffer from, i.e. product addiction. Sure, most of us have been through that product junkie stage (I prefer to call it the “natural hair honeymoon period”). Unfortunately some never get out of that stage, which is why we need pause for a moment here, and take inventory. So, grab your coffee / smoothie, and come closer.

You remember the days your bathroom used to look like a mini pharmacy everytime wash day came around? Well, I hope those days are over. If not, do not fret, there’s a way to beat the addiction.

Here’s a few tips on how to curb the product addiction:

1.

Find a hair blogger / vlogger who has similar hair type as you, observe them for sometime and test out the products they love, to see if they work on your hair. Caution: As tempting as it is, DO NOT buy all the products they review, instead… search for their normal wash-day routine to find their favourite. Note: It’s not guaranteed that you will get the exact results because there’s other external factors to consider too, i.e. the climate where you live. That being said, it’s still a good start to finding what works for you.

2.

Do a bit of your own research on using natural products found in your very own kitchen pantry. I am pretty sure you can hassle up items that you’ll be able to substitute into your wash day or everyday routine e.g. olive oil, eggs, avocado, honey e.t.c. If you fail to make these diy’s work the first time, don’t despair – just try different combinations / pairings. You will find that you gain more understanding the more initiative you take to educate yourself.

3.

Learn tips and tricks on how to be efficient and effective from other Vloggers. I love @naptural85 because of her quick and efficient tips, and all other the natural hair hacks she shares that save a whole lot of time. And you’ll realize too that you don’t need that much product.

4.

With the products you have already bought but don’t use, (you know – the ones you think don’t work because your hair didn’t turn out like so and so’s hair), re-visit them again once in a while. Who knows, maybe paired with a different product they’d work much better, or in a different quantity etc… All I am saying is; even though we are trying to condense and simplify, don’t be too quick to throw things out. After all, you bought them with your hard earned money. Just try to use and finish off as many of them as you can. Well, unless if the product is really bad.

5.

Lastly, common sense should always prevail. You are not going to take advice about curly natural hair from someone who has chemically, permanently straightened their hair, or vice versa. It’s much easier from someone who walks the walk, and faces the kind of challenges you face everyday. Unless they have an array of great credentials to back them up, of course. Otherwise you’ll just end up with a whole lot of products that do not help you in anyway.
