So what’s the hype about “pre-pooing? I’m here to tell you. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced with my natural hair has been washing it. I am someone who faithfully pre-poos before almost every wash and I truly believe my hair has reaped the benefits.
Pre-poo is short for a Pre-shampoo treatment. It is a optional step in many woman’s natural hair routine.
Before there were so many options of cleansing natural hair, most were using a normal shampoo containing sulfates, which are know to strip textured hair of natural oils and can cause tangling during the shampoo process. To combat this and essentially prep one’s hair for shampooing, women began using a pre-shampoo treatment.

When I tried washing my hair without a pre-shampoo treatment, as soon as the shampoo touched my hair it immediately became shrunken and tangled to the point where I couldn’t even pull it apart with my fingers. It was a complete nightmare. Once I added the pre-shampoo treatment to my wash day routine, shampooing my hair became a much easier task to manage.
I would dampen my hair with water, add a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and conditioner, finger detangle, and put into large twist. Then I would wash my hair section by section. Even after pre-pooing when using certain shampoos my hair still feels a little stripped but not nearly as before using the treatment. It has really made a world of difference for me.

I think some people are weary of adding an extra step to their wash routine, but I think its totally worth it. The benefits of pre-poling include having more moisturized hair, stronger hair, and less tangling and shedding during wash day. I see pre-shampooing as a way to sneak in some extra TLC that could really make a difference in the overall health of your hair.
