Curls On Fleek: Beach Vacation Protective Styles

natural hair on beach vacation

It’s summer, at lease for a few more weeks, which means school’s out and it’s finally time to use that two weeks vacation you’ve been sitting on at work. But when going on vacation as a natural, one of your first thoughts is “what am I going to do with this hair?!” From humidity, chlorine, salt water, and extreme heat, to having so many poolside frozen margaritas that you forget to detangle properly or rinse after a swim – there are far too many elements working against your curls on vacation.

Here are three classic low maintenance protective styles to keep your hands out of your hair during your beach vacation trip:

BRAIDS, TWISTS OR FAUX LOCS

Channel your inner Solange Knowles with this timeless go-to protective style. But be warned, these things are 100 pounds heavier when wet. To lighten the load, consider wearing them up with a cute head wrap or scarf whenever you head for a dip. If you must dunk your entire head in water, keep a leave in spray handy to protect your braids, twists and faux locs from the salty water and sun. We like Infusium 23.

REMOVABLE HAIR PIECES

There are so many companies offering “clip in” natural hair, our favorite being Heat Free Hair. They have hair that comes in every curl pattern and texture and they’ve just launched a Blow Out collection. To maintain this look you can take out the clip ins each evening.

Another option, if your hair is long enough, is to wear your hair in a top knot and add a hair piece to make your bun appear fuller. This has the added benefit of protecting you ends from the heat and humidity. We love this tutorial by Kyma Monai – it’s the right balance of chic and “I woke up like dis”!

FULL SEW IN WEAVE

In my opinion a full sew-in weave with a closure is one of THE most reliable protective styles when going on vacation. Literally none of your hair is exposed. Opt for a straight hair texture and even after a dip in the pool the hair will be easy to manage with a little leave in conditioner and a wide-tooth comb.

Lace closures are so versatile, and with 100% human hair you can dye, curl, straighten, and wash the hair as if it were growing out of your head -in half the time of an average wash day with a head full of curls and none of the damage to your precious coils! Note: have your stylist bleach (lighten) the lace knots of the closure to blend with your natural scalp color.
