As an airline employee, there is a guideline I must adhere to when it comes to my hair. Very simple, two braids, low ponytail or low bun. However if your hair is shorter, you are allowed to wear it out. This is where my inner diva is allowed to shine. I am able to do protective styles such as crochet braids, that let me channel my inner Beyoncé, while slaying at work.

My coworkers love all the different styles that I do with my hair. Some are more vocal than others about sharing which curl pattern they think I look better with. Two of my coworkers ask me regularly what I’m planning to do to my hair next? This conversation is heard sometimes by others and I take that time to educate them more about natural hair care and the reasons why I went natural.

Along the way I have had family and friends express to me that they want to go natural but they are scared. Hair is just hair, at the end of the day we all have the choice to make the decision to relax, weave, or just leave our hair natural. It is a personal preference.

All my friends who have gone natural have expressed how much they love their hair and how they wish they would have done it sooner. I also have friends who have tried and could not handle the upkeep and returned to the routine slathering on of the creamy crack. That, again, is a personal choice and I respect the fact they tried.

My family is so curious about the proper care of hair overall. We all have small children and we owe it to our children to learn as much as we can about how to take care of their hair early so they retain the information and are able to share it with other people as they pass through life.

Lately, even my husband has asked questions about what products he should use to moisturize my hair and inner me wanted to run him to the beauty supply. I was able to contain myself and I introduced him to the LOC method to help enhance his curl pattern.

This boom of information for naturals is a beautiful time for young naturalistas to learn and grow in. I wish it would have happened while I was younger but the fact that it is happening is beautiful, nonetheless.
