Milkmaid braids and/or twists are the perfect protective style for Fall. The hairstyle captures the cool yet warm, etheral feeling the season evokes while protecting those oh so delicate ends from the changing temperature… double win!
We were inspired by Tracee Ellis Ross’ staple milkmaid braids. This quick and easy style always made Tracee look effortlessly chic on the show Girlfriends. Mahogany Curls demonstrates in her video above how she achieves this look.
Traditionally the milkmaid hairstyle places the braids/twist on top of the head at the crown (like in the video) but we also recommend experimenting with pinning the braids/twist behind your head near the nape of your neck.
Great for all textures (Coils, Curls, Kinks and Waves) and hair states (Straight Naturals, Transitioners and Locs) all you need is stretched hair (i.e. not in its shrunken state straight after a wash) and some bobby pins to make this look work. Those of you who are better with your hair can try this with braids. If you’re new to hair care then you can’t go wrong with two-strand twists – they’re easier to achieve. Again see the video above.
