LOC Method & Products for Fine Natural Hair

loc method for fine hair

When I used to relax my hair, there was one thing I would always notice; I never had volume. Like, ever. I would look at how my friends’ relaxed hair bounced like a kid in a candy story. Mine never did that, it was always limp and flat.

Even when it wasn’t freshly relaxed, my mother’s fingers would glide through my hair as she continued my cornrows saying, “Sarah your hair is so soft. Unlike my thick hair.” It never dawned on me until I went natural that even though your hair is a certain texture that the actual density, or volume, of the hair strand was another thing.

Just like other textures, there are products that work better than others. Fine hair tends to be a little more delicate and requires a more lighter touch. I thought I‘d start with the infamous L.O.C (liquid-oil-cream) method to recommend products for my fine-hair curly girls.

Water or Lightweight Leave-In

You don’t want to weigh your hair down so starting off with something light and moisturizing is the key. My favorite Leave-in is the Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave In Conditioner.

I’ve tried other ones and this is by far the best product I always come back to. This Leave-In makes my hair feel moisturized when I don’t want to worry about shrinkage and detangles my hair. It also has a fresh scent that I like.

Oils

By now we know that oils lock in moisture for your hair. If you’re the type that like multiple oils for multiple benefits I highly suggest an oil mix. The Indian Hemp & Tamanu Grow & Strengthen Hair Serum by Nubian Heritage is great for those who want a light oil mix.

If you’re on a budget other great essential oils are olive oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, rosehip oil. If you’re the type that likes heavier oils like castor and coconut oils, I’d suggest adding that with some lighter oils to avoid weighing your hair down.

Cream and Gels

The best cream that works for me is Shea butter. Shea butter also produces its own oil when it’s warmed up by rubbing it together so you can also skip the oil part and get straight to the styling.

Although I love some other stylers the Kinky Curly Curling Custard is the only gel I have found that doesn’t weigh my hair down, doesn’t leave it crunchy, keeps its hold and makes my hair feel soft. The best part is that you only need a little bit of it so it doesn’t go too fast (depending on how much hair you have of course).
