Beauty of the Week: Lauren Lewis

black hair products netherlands

It’s always a pleasure to feature a naturalista from across the pond. So on cue, Lauren Lewis pops up on our Instagram feed and it was love at first curl-sight. Lauren is a Netherlands based beauty with hair that makes heads turn. Though many may envy her full head of hair, she explains how much work it is to keep those tresses in top condition. See if you’re up to the challenge below.

Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I’ve always been natural. I’ve never used any chemicals to change the texture of my hair. But I really started loving and embracing my curls at around 14 years old.

Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

• Creme of Nature Moisturizing Shampoo (once every two weeks)
• Cantu Conditioner (once a week)
• Homemade Banana, Honey, Coconut & Olive Oil Hair Mask (once a week)

What are your staple hair products? Where do you buy them?

I think every girl with curly hair can relate to constantly having to change their hair routine! Currently, I’m using Sedal Rizos Obedientes, Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner and the FANTASIA Aloe Vera Serum.

What are your favorite hairstyles?

A loose low bun when I’m in a hurry but I still want to show my curls. A big frizzy bun on the top of my head when I’m in a hurry and I want to keep the hair out of my face. When I have time I just wear it in a high ponytail. Something like the ‘pineapple’ with a nice bold lipstick.

What was the last compliment you received about your hair?!

“Your hair is amazing! I wish I had your hair.” And my response was, “Be careful what you wish for!” Having curly hair is not easy. It takes a lot of time to keep it looking good and healthy.

You live in the Netherlands. We hear there’s a big natural community in Amsterdam. Are you involved in the community in anyway (events etc.)?

Here in The Netherlands we have so many mixed race girls with beautiful hair. I do know many girls with curly hair and we share all our ‘secrets’ and new product finds etc. I wish we had more events, especially for curly, kinky and afro hair! I would definitely go and meet new naturalistas.

For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

When I was 16 I had waist length hair. At that age I was obsessed with trying out new products. My Mom, poor thing, was tired of spending money on hair products! She is Dutch (white) and never really knew what to do with curly/afro hair. So I had to do figure it out on my own.

I wish I had someone to help me find the right products. And also someone to share the experience with. I probably wouldn’t have spent that much money on stuff that would not work for my hair.

The upside is now I can give advise to other girls that are going through the same process. Everyone around me knows I’ve been through A LOT with my hair. Even girls with straight and wavy hair ask me for advise which feels great.
