Beauty of the Week: Temi

If we could summarize Temi’s hair in three words it would be Fun, Flirty and FABULOUS. She’s the kind of natural beauty that makes you wish you’d discovered and appreciated you natural curls in your youth (assuming you aren’t still under 35!). How we would have rocked our curls so! We’ve featured Temi numerous times on Instagram so we’re so excited to have her finally on our site. Learn how her kinky coily hair has become an integral part of her.

Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I was natural up until I was 12 years old. No one wanted to deal with doing my hair or they felt that it would be easier if I got a relaxer. I saw one of my younger sisters watching a woman describing her natural hair journey on YouTube. I immediately said that is what I’m missing – the diversity of my natural hair and it being a big part of my life. I have been natural for three years now and I am loving it!

Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I currently wash my hair once a month. I really like to leave my hair alone and keep things very simple. I recently started conditioning every two weeks and I feel it has helped especially with the warm weather here in New York. Every day I use generous amounts of water, leave-in conditioner and some type of oil or serum to keep my hair refreshed and moisturized.

What are your staple hair products?

I have been experimenting a lot of products and but right now I am love Dark & Lovely’s Au Naturale Moisture LOC line. The Sealing Cream, Leave-in Spray and Oil Cocktail are a great combination and my hair loves it. For shampooing and conditioning I am currently using Shea Moisture’s Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and the Raw Shea Butter restorative conditioner (it is great as a leave-in also).

What are your favorite hairstyles?

My favorite hairstyle has to be in high puff it is simple and cute. I like to give my hair a break and I do two strand twists or braids with my hair.

What was the last compliment you received about your hair?!

The last compliment I received was from a man and he said, “wow I like your hair, I need some of that for my head!”

For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

I would tell people that you really learn a lot about yourself on the natural hair journey. Patience is really important. It may get frustrating finding out what works for you but it will be worth it. I had my “Curls Understood™” moment when I finally cut off my relaxed ends. Going into this I knew I would face trial, error and frustration but it was time for me to focus on having my hair healthy and enjoying every part of my natural hair. I became a new person and I have grown to love it!
