8 Tips to Make Your Hair Thicker… Naturally

how do i make my natural hair thicker

So many of us equate our hair’s health with thickness and fullness, but due to genetics, our environment and haircare routines, hair thickness can vary wildly between us. Let’s be clear. People are BORN with a pre-determined number of hair strands on their head (known as hair density) and each strand has a defined thickness – together that makes up your hair’s volume. If you have the appearance of fine hair there’s no way to increase your hair’s density BUT there are ways to make it appear fuller. Below I answer the age old question, “how do i make my natural hair thicker?” and offer up methods that are 100% natural.

1

Castor Oil

I find Castor Oil to be the most effective for adding fullness to my hair. Lately, I’ve been using a mixture that includes rosemary, coconut and tea tree oil. While looking back through old photos of my hair, I noticed how much finer it looked before I started using Castor Oil. The mixture smells like coffee. It’s a very overbearing scent but to tone it down, I apply as much Lavender or Rosemary oil and the smell flips from disgusting to delightful.

2

Eggs

Eggs are one of the strongest natural resources of protein. Our hair is made up of protein so the thicker your hair, the more protein it has. As well as adding thickness, eggs add strength to the individual hair strands. Protein treatments with eggs, honey & olive oil can be added to your hair regimen every two weeks. A protein treatment every week may be excessive. Avoid overdoing the protein or your hair may end up feeling like an extension cord wire.

3

Olive Oil

Its fatty acids contribute to the make up of the proteins within hair (Yay!). Olive oil is frequently used in hot oil treatments which I highly recommend. Whenever my hair is extremely dry and my scalp itchy, I do a hot oil treatment and my hair feels and looks 100% better.

4

Scalp Massages

Stimulating the scalp is always helpful when trying to grow encourage quick and thicker hair. Massage stimulation encourages blood flow and leads to increased hair growth which means increased fullness… YASSS!

5

Stay Away From Chemicals

Chemicals can mess with the natural balance of your hair by denaturing the proteins in it, making hair appear thinner, as well as causing hair loss. Remember to research the ingredients in ANY product you use so you know what you’re getting into.

6

Avocados

Avocados contain fatty acids making it another mega contributor to hair thickness. Avocados, in the form of an oil or even an actual avocado, contain healthy fats that improve the thickness of individual hair strands.

7

Thick Hair Requires Sealants!

You need more than just an oil but something like Shea Butter to seal your ends. Natural hair sops up moisture like a sponge and will leave the hair quickly if you don’t follow up moisturizing with a sealant. Sealing in moisture not only improves your hair’s health over time but trapping in moisture/water actual makes your hair strands appear thicker as they swell when water logged.

8

TRIM When You Can!

I’ve made the mistake of not trimming to hold onto length. The end result is losing the appearance of thickness as the ends of my hair would start to thin out. I had so many split ends that my hair stylist had to trim off 2 inches. Trim regularly to avoid that dreaded “see-through”, ragged ends look – never a good thing.
