Dying Your Hair Black: The Natural Way

dye natural hair black

Everyone has had the urge to dye their hair at least once in their life. Some of us go the conventional way and use box dyes or go to the professionals while others worry about the chemical damages done to their hair after using the harsh chemicals that are found in conventional dyes. Luckily, there are traditional ways to dye your hair without having to worry about hair degeneration.

WHAT DO NATURAL DYES CONSIST OF?

Most natural dyes come in the form of a tea, rinse or a paste. They consist of natural herbs and spices that are known to have been used by our ancestors for various purposes many years ago.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Unlike a conventional dye, natural dyes work progressively meaning that it is not a one-time process in some cases. You may have to repeat the process 2-3 times to achieve the color you want depending on the current color of your hair and how light or dark you want to go.

It is important to note that the current state of your hair plays a major role in the outcome of using a natural dye. If your hair is bleached or severely damaged, the herbs and/or spices may react differently resulting in a different color. To ensure you have adequate results, do the strand test before applying the dye to the rest of your hair.

PREPARATION

Preparation is a vital step in the entire process. I usually detangle and deep condition my hair a few hours before the dying process to get rid of product build up. Getting rid of product build up is important because it prevents the color you want from being hindered. After doing this, I dry my hair and divide it into four sections without adding any styling products.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• Black walnut powder
• Boiled water
• Gloves
• Shower cap

METHOD

1) Depending on how thick or thin your hair is and how much dye you’ll need, boil an adequate amount of water.
2) Pour the boiling water in a bowl (preferably glass because metal supposedly reacts with the color) and add the black walnut powder until it forms a paste.
3) Let the paste sit for one hour.
4) Apply evenly to your hair and cover with a shower cap for 30-45 mins.
5) Rinse your hair leaving some of the mixture in.
6) Dry and style you normally do.
