DIY Natural Hair Cleanser

Who doesn’t love a little do-it-yourself hair therapy? I love walking into my kitchen and creating a healthy treat for my hair, skin, or nails. Here’s an inexpensive DIY cleanser that also treats dry scalp and adds shine. Try this on your next wash day!

All you need is:

• 1/3 Cup Water
• 2/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
• Olive Oil (More for dry hair, less for oilyhair, use your best judgement)
• Your Normal Shampoo and Conditioner

Step 1:   Grab a recycled water bottle or any old container you feel would make a great applicator. (I strongly suggest the water bottle.)

Combine your ingredients into the bottle, close the cap, and give it a good shake. Take off the cap and very safely poke a small hole in the center of it. The hole doesn’t need to be that big, any size smaller than the opening of a straw will work. Place the cap back onto your bottle, secure tightly, and set it aside. (Don’t worry about the vinegar smell, I’ve got that covered.)

Step 2:  Grab a few towels, hair scrunchies, a comb (optional), gloves (optional), and your handy new cleanser. Situate yourself a place you will be comfortable but not where the smell of vinegar will disturb others around you. I like to sit in the middle of the floor of my bedroom on a towel with a towel around my shoulders.

Give the cleanser another shake before applying. Part your hair in any desired fashion, and work the cleanser into your hair. Keep the hole of your water bottle as close to your scalp as possible. It usually takes me about 5-6 shakes of the bottle per section. Let your hair sit up in a shower cap or bun for about 45 minutes.

Step 3: Grab your comb and hop in the shower for a good wash! Shampoo very well and rinse. When applying your conditioner, comb it through your hair, getting your roots and ends very well. A good shampoo and conditioner will remove the vinegar smell. Rinse out the conditioner with cool water (doesn’t have to be ice cold), this will help reduce frizz later.

Step 4: Apply your go-to moisturizing products and style as usual.

So what’s the point of all this? Well this kind of cleanser strips your hair of all impurities without any harsh chemicals. The olive oil adds moisture and balances the strength of the apple cider vinegar.

When all is said and done your hair will be shinier, bouncier, moisturized, and feeling great. For the best result you should do this process weekly. Enjoy and have fun!
