So, You Decided to Transition

deciding to transition to natural hair

Returning back to your natural hair is one of the most rewarding things you can do in life. I decided to transition back to natural after realizing that my hair was not as healthy as it should be and a perm was only damaging it further.

So, what does it take to successfully start your journey to natural hair? Below, I have a few tips to help you get started. I hope this will help everyone who is finding it a little difficult to transition.

Is Transitioning Truly The Route You Want To Take?

Transitioning, growing out your permed hair in order to wear your hair in its naturally curly state, is a journey. The process of transitioning can range from three to six months if you rare aggressively taking care of your hair and six months to two years if you are passive. With added TLC, time, and patience, transitioning may not be ideal for most. Make sure that you are willing to give this process your all, in the end, every bit of it will be worth it. Document Your Journey

The best thing I could have done during my transitioning journey was to write and take pictures. I bought a notebook and wrote down every new product I bought and how that product worked, every time I had wash day, etc. I wrote it all. I still write in that notebook now, even though I am fully natural. I have pictures of hair styles that I’ve tried, monthly new growth pictures, and more. Documenting your journey allows you to keep up with how far you have come and how your hair is adjusting to it all. So, keep a notebook and camera handy and write and snap everything! Documenting your journey is also a great keepsake to have and look back on. You can even use apps to help you document on-the-go.

Be Patient

As stated earlier, transitioning is a journey and patience is key! I mentally gave up at least 100 times during my transition because I just knew my hair wasn’t growing and everything I was doing wasn’t working. Don’t let your mind play tricks on you. Your hair is growing strong and healthy, it just takes time to see progress.

These are just a few tips to help start the journey. Starting is just the first step to a rewarding result. I will be here along the way to offer tips, help, and support. Good luck on your journey and Congratulations on taking the first step!
