Life As A Multi-Textured Curly: My Detangling Secrets

dealing with multi textured hair

Hello my lovelies, as a newly appointed Curly Ambassador (Oooo this feels super fancy!) I’d like to reveal to you my secrets when it comes to dealing with multi textured hair. Sit back relax and enjoy as this opens your eyes to things you always wondered about. So as the title suggests, multi textured hair can be a struggle. I’m sure most of you know how I feel! This one’s for you.

What Makes Someone A “Multi-textured” Natural

• Do parts of your hair have the comb glide through easier than others?
• Do products work and feel different in sections of your hair?
• Are sections of your hair drier than the others?

If you answered yes to any of these 3 questions you are a multi-textured natural for sure! All of the mentioned above are characteristics of multi-textured hair, meaning you have a mix of kinky, coily and curly tresses. I’m talking 3c, 4a, 4b, 4c all on the same head.

Multi textured hair in itself is a blessing and a curse. The best of both worlds but at the same time a lesson in time management and patience. I have been able to, through trial and error, debunk some myths and prove that certain methods of caring for natural hair may not necessarily work for all.

So one of my biggest struggles as a multi-textured natural is detangling. How do you work through all those different textures and come out the other end with hair that isn’t damaged or broken? Here are my detangling secrets to help you on your way…

Detangling Multi-textured Hair

• Do not go under the shower immediately, don’t do it!
• Your spray bottle is your friend. As opposed to dunking your hair under water spritz your hair with water instead. The pressure from the shower creates tangles
• Spray your hair all over and gently use you fingers to pick your hair, this softens your hair without the tangles
• Apply a thin layer of conditioner or coconut oil as a prepoo
• Instead of the conventional 4/6 sections, section your hair off according to the different textures (make sure they are workable sections)
• Shampoo as usual or if you’re cowashing do so as you would normally
• Use your fingers to pull apart tangles as much as possible before whipping out your comb
• It is very important to use a t-shirt instead of a towel. Towels encourage tangling due to their rough surface and drys out the hair.

To ensure that your next wash day is hassle free, follow up with a light leave in and coconut oil sealing at least bi-weekly, and always endeavor to tie your hair up at night to keep tangles at bay, holding in as much moisture as possible. And there you have it – multiple textures can be a breeze!
