My Top Products for Curly/Wavy Hair

It always happens the same way; I meet another curly-headed person, we’re immediately drawn to each other, and the inevitable “What do you use on your hair?” questions begin. Although my routine is constantly changing, I stick to a pretty basic routine and seldom differ from it. I should also note that my hair is short/medium length, high density, and fine with a 3b/3c curl pattern as well as low-medium porosity.

Let’s talk frequency— I co-wash my hair about once or twice a week, and shampoo with a sulfate free product about twice a month. For co-washing, I currently love Yes to Carrots Nourishing Conditioner. It’s got wonderful slip, provides the right amount of moisture, and doesn’t weigh my hair down. I love it! Sometimes I’ll go full “Curly Girl Method” and cleanse with this and then use a bit as a leave-in. I’ll use this routine on my very low maintenance days, and you know what? It works really well!

If I plan on shampooing my hair, I like to do a bit of a deep conditioning treatment beforehand. The day before washday, I slather my hands in coconut oil and gently detangle all my strands. I then put my hair into braids or flat twists and sleep in them overnight. The next day I use DevaCurl Heaven in Hair as a deep conditioning treatment. I put my hair in twists and cover with baggies and towels for about 20 minutes. I rinse this out using Nature’s Gate Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, which leaves my hair feeling clean and fresh without drying out my curls.

Depending on how my hair is feeling, I may use Giovanni Weightless Moisture Leave-in Conditioner and a small amount of Lily of the Desert Pure Aloe Vera Gel to my hair to seal in the moisture. If it’s a really humid day, I just let it go.

So that’s my routine and product list in a nutshell! Pretty basic, with some changes depending on how my hair is feeling. Some other things I like to try out from time to time include:

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Bee Mine Hold Curly Butter
• Half raw apple cider vinegar, half distilled water as a clarifier
• Henna treatments about once every few months
DevaCurl Volumizing Foam
EcoStyler Gel – particularly helpful if doing braids or twists
