Best Drugstore Products for Natural Hair

best drugstore products for curly hair 2016

I’m big on drugstore beauty buys because I simply refuse to pay an enormous amount for a product that will not last me a long time. When it comes to shopping for hair care products at the drugstore, I recommend finding a brand you trust and sticking with them. I’ve tried many brands, but my absolute favorite is Shea Moisture, it’s never done me wrong!

I’ve tried six different lines by Shea Moisture, the Coconut and Hibiscus, Yucca and Plantain, Raw Shea Butter, African Black Soap, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, and Tahitian Noni & Monoi. I would recommend any line and any product from this brand because they really focus each line on a specific hair type, condition, or treatment. Here’s a breakdown of all the lines I’ve tried and how they worked for me.

If you’re starting your natural hair journey or have just done the “big chop,” I would recommend the Coconut and Hibiscus line which focuses on anti-frizz, moisture, and shine. I’d specifically suggest the shampoo, conditioner, and curl enhancing smoothie (my favorite!) It defines curls so well and the fragrance is immaculate.

Yucca and Plantain line. This line aims to strengthen, thicken, and volumize and has worked really well for me in the past. I used the shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask when I noticed my hair thinning at the crown and it definitely made a big difference.

Growing your hair out? Try the Raw Shea Butter line for stronger strands. I used the shampoo, conditioner, detangler, and deep treatment mask.

The African Black Soap line is for naturals who have sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, and dandruff. The shampoo and conditioner really helped control my dandruff by leaving my scalp moisturized.

I am currently using the Jamaican Black Castor Oil line on my hair now. This line promises to strengthen, grow, and repair hair. I purchased the shampoo, leave-in conditioner, and styling lotion but have not yet noticed a huge difference. I will say that the products leave my hair clean and moisturized as to what it is claiming to do, but nonetheless, my hair is  when I am finished. I purchased the  from this line.

Lastly, I use the Tahitian Noni and Monoi line only when I want to straighten my hair. This line has keratin in it which helps smoothes the hair. I definitely noticed my curls are more relaxed after using this line, which helps when it comes time to straighten my hair.  I wouldn’t recommend using it on a regular basis because it loosens the natural curl pattern.

No matter your hair type or condition, Shea Moisture has the answers for everyone. If you’ve tried any of these lines, leave your review in the comments!

I started using the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus products about a year ago after reading the Curly Girl Handbook. I wanted products that contained no silicones and other damaging ingredients. I use the shampoo and conditioner, the Curl and Style Milk as the leave-in conditioner, and the Curl Enhancing Smoothie for the cream. I also use the Deep Conditioning Mask weekly. My hair has more curl definition and much less frizz, it even feels soft and silky. My hair is fine and has fractured curls that would frizz with any humidity. Now I don’t fret about rainy days because my hair is so well conditioned it doesn’t frizz up. Every time I see someone with hair like I had (dry and frizzy), I want to tell them how great these products are.
