Beauty of the Week: Sharon Lake

coily natural hair

Have you ever seen Curls so pretty? We haven’t! That’s why we asked our Curly Ambassador Sharon of Nappy Hair Nation to be this week’s Beauty of the Week. Below Sharon shares her tips for the perfect roller set…

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I started transitioning after I met my husband in 2002. I got married in 2003 and was moving away from my mom who is the only person I felt comfortable doing my hair. Not wanting to deal with getting relaxers from someone else, I decided to see what my natural hair looked like.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I wash my hair every other week, about twice a month. I deep condition once every 3 months but more frequently during the colder months.

3. What are your staple hair products?

I’m not much of a ‘product junkie’ and like to keep things as simple as possible. My favorite shampoo is from Shea Moisture “Coconut Hibiscus” since the ingredients are great, it’s easy to find, inexpensive and my hair really responds well to it. My second favorite product that I couldn’t live without would be Kinky Curly’s leave-in conditioner “Knot Today”. For daily use I use pure Coconut Oil and Shea Butter to keep my hair and scalp moisturized.

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

I am a roller set queen! I grew up setting my hair with setting lotion and rollers and found this technique transferred over well when I was transitioning and I kept doing it once my hair was 100% natural. I use different sized perm rods and drinking straws mostly.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

When I decided to go natural, there wasn’t YouTube or any of the social networks that connect us today. I would encourage all new naturals to read, read, read! My “Curls Understood™” moment came when I read a book called “The Science of Black Hair” since it changed the way I had been doing things for years. Find out what products work well for your hair and don’t get wrapped up in wishing your hair grew like someone else’s. Focus on loving what your unique crown can do and learn to be happy with that. When you see other Naturals out and about, approach them and you’ll experience the unique bond that this community shares! Whether your hair is kinky, curly, coily or wavy, it’s your unique gift. Take good care of it and it will be kind to you for years to come!
