Beauty of the Week: Lilian Uwanyuze

twa kinky hair

Our insert model for the April box is Lilian (@lili_ann on Instagram). She caught our attention immediately for so many reasons: her show-stopping cut first and foremost; her style and of course, her beauty. So we wanted to inspire others who are thinking of cutting their hair this Summer. Hair crushes don’t always have to have long hair.

1. Why did you go natural (assuming you haven’t always been natural)? How long have you been natural?

I went natural after one of my close friends and I watched the Chris Rock documentary Good Hair. we both walked out the theater talking about how damaging relaxers were and within a month after I cut off all my hair and went natural.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

My hair regimen is pretty simple. I co-wash my hair about once and week, add some coconut oil and do 4 chunky twits to let my hair air dry. Every so often I will add shampoo, but I don’t really have a set schedule.

3. What are your staple hair products?

My staple products are Carol’s Daughter Loc Butter, Coconut oil and on occasion Kinky-Curly, Knot Today detangler.

4. What inspired your current fab TWA/undercut hairstyle?

My current hair style was inspired by nothing other than sheer laziness. Shortly after I went natural, I was looking at blogs and youtube videos of how to maintain my hair. Most videos seemed to show several steps that I kept failing to follow. I was also getting disappointed that my hair was not as big as I wanted it to be.

I have thin hair and I had to come to realization that my hair was not going to grow to what I had imagined. So I found a style which involved pinning my hair back into a faux mohawk and after several months of doing this, I just decided it would be a lot easier to cut my sides.

5. What are your hair goals for 2016?

I have one hair goal for 2016; that is length retention.

6. Who is your celeb curl crush?

I would probably say Erykah Badu and from instagram (@simplycyn)

7. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

My Curls Understood moment is moment I shaved my sides. I was scared to cut my hair because I was still dreaming of the moment my afro would be “bigger than life”. As soon as the 1st chunk of hair fell, my fear disappeared and was replaced with sense of “yes I’ve got this “.
The advise I would give to anyone is that everyones hair is different, use the other peoples hair stories and regimens as a guide.
