Plus her signature bobbed hairstyle is to die for! Straight natural hair sistas take note. Lauren shares with us why she prefers to wear her curly hair straight and how she keeps it “laid”. 1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?
I’ve always been a natural gal! Being as though my aunt has a thriving luxury hair care salon, hair runs in the family. As a kid, I used to hate when my mom would braid my hair at night to wear throughout the week. I thought braids looked “unfashionable.” Now, I’m thankful she did. My hair grew tremendously. By 16, it was all the way down my back. Now at 22, it still grows extremely fast – especially from cutting it once a month to maintain my Little Black Bob.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?
I always use the Brilliance shampoo and conditioner from Wella Professional. After about a week or so, my hair gets extremely oily so I wash it once a week to keep it bouncy and fresh. When I visit my aunt’s salon, Cole Stevens – in D.C. every month, the stylists use a dry shampoo or clarifying shampoo by NIOXIN to clean my scalp and strip the oils. After it’s washed, I always go under hydration to keep my hair strand strong.

3. What are your staple hair products?
My go-to hair products are from Sebastian Professional. I faithfully use Sebastian to keep my bob fresh but also achieve what I like to call, “fashion hair.” My favorite Sebastian products are the Shine Crafter, Liquid Gloss, Trilliant spray and Liquid Steel. You can see how I use those products in my recent Bobbin episode, Lay That Bob.

4. Why do you prefer to wear your hair straight?
Just as much as I’m a “natural” gal, I”m also a “straight” gal. Straight hair is so enticing to me. Although I have a great curl pattern, I prefer to blowdry my hair to perfection and seal it with a flat iron. It fits me, my style and my occupation.

5. What are your favorite hairstyles?
Well, I’ve had a bob for almost three years now. It’s become my statement hairstyle. I’ve even branded myself as Little Black Bob. When looking for a new hairstyle, I simply reinvent my Little Black Bob. In the past, I’ve had a diagonal, asymetrical and disconnected cuts. My bob has been really short, medium and also a bit long. Recently, I shaved a section on the side of my bob for some unexpected edginess. My cut varies by the month. It’s my own way of trying something new while still staying true to myself – it’s thrilling!

6. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?
My “Curls Understood” moment definitely took place during college. I went to a university almost three hours from home and five hours from Cole Stevens Salon. Without my go-to salon, I was forced to put all of those hair tips and tricks my aunt taught me to use. She sent me away with two expensive GHD flat irons. At that moment, it was trial and error. But by the end of my freshman year, I could blowdry and press my hair better than some of the hairstylists from my hometown. Now, I’m so thankful that my hair resources were limited for four years. I know my hair very well and can seal it until it is laid!
