Beauty of the Week: Genesis Torres

Genesis Torres is one of our fearless Curly Ambassadors (you can read her articles here). We love how big her hair is and she’s super creative with how she wears it so we thought it high time to get the deets on her hair secrets and how she learned to love her curls.

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I began my natural hair journey in 2012. I began a personal spiritual journey and I wanted to fall in love with the hair my Lord blessed me with. For years growing up I was heckled because I didn’t look like the average Latina with silky straight strands or loose waves. I really wanted to learn to love myself… and my curls.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

My hair regimen is as follows:

• I co-wash twice a week with Cantu Shea Butter Conditioning Co-wash;
• Currently, I deep condition once a week with either with a DIY coconut oil deep conditioner or Hask Argan Oil Repairing Deep Conditioner;
• I clarify once a month with an ACV rinse and I trim only as needed.
• I also love bantu knots and twist outs to elongate my curls.

3. What are your staple hair products?

Currently my staples are Miss Jessie’s Multi Cultural Curls hair lotion (it does exactly what it claims!) I have the best wash n gos with it: Bouncy, defined and soft coils. I also love ORS Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly. Whether I’m doing a twist out, perm rod set or bantu knot, my hair looks soft, defined and amazing with this product.

3. What are your favorite hairstyles?

My favorite styles are a high bun when I’m in a rush and side swept curls for special occasions. Whether in its natural state or after a rod set or using a curling wand.

5. What was the last compliment you received about your hair?!

It’s so fluffy!!

6. Who is your celeb curly crush at the moment?

Solange Knowles always takes my breath away with her hair.

7. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

My advice to any natural is keep pressing! Once I found the regimen and products that married with my hair, the health of my hair was all that mattered after that point. I stopped comparing myself to other curly bloggers, Instagram celebs, YouTube natural hair gurus and truly started falling in love with my hair and they way it moved and shaped around my head. So keep on pressing, your hair will love you back.
