Dmarie is one of Curls Understood’s amazing Curly Ambassadors! We wanted to feature her as our Beauty of the Week because she’s so fearless with her hair. She experiments with hairstyles, color and length… and everything always look fabulous on her! Read her tips below so you can reach your own Curls Understood moment.

1. Why did you go natural (assuming you haven’t always been natural)? How long have you been natural?

I went natural for several reasons. First off, after educating myself on the harsh chemicals that are found in relaxers I felt that my body shouldn’t be exposed to that any longer. Another reason was because I wasn’t retaining much length. I had relaxed hair with bleached highlights – which was a serious no-no. I have been natural about 5 years now.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

On a daily basis I “ listen ” to my hair. If I feel that my hair is dirty I will shampoo it with a sulfate free shampoo about once every other week. I deep condition once a week to make sure that my hair maintains its elasticity.

3. What are your staple hair products?

I would have to say that the Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in would be my staple product for any twist out style. I use it on dry or wet hair. My favorite hair gel would be the Ampro Style Olive Oil Gel. I have been using this gel faithfully for about 2 years. Shea Moisture Hair Coloring System is my favorite hair dye to date. I color my hair at home and this product makes it really easy to color all of my hair strands.

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

My current favorite hairstyle right now would have to be the hanging bantu knot. I did them for the first time in a video tutorial and the results were great. It is a very convenient style because their is no need for perm rods and the definition is amazing! I received so many compliments that day walking through the mall. My go-to style for special occasions would be a old school perm rod set with the white & grey. I actually went on a job interview with my hair in this style and got the job the very same day.

5. What are your hair goals for 2016?

My hair goals for 2016 are to let my hair do its thing. My hair has been long and short throughout my natural hair journey,
which I am very proud of. Having my hair shorter has taught me a lot about myself and was the jump start to getting back healthy. Natural hair is versatile and I am embracing every part of it!

6. Who is your celeb curl crush?

My celeb curl crush would have to be Solange. She embraces her afro unapologetically which I am all for.

7. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trial and error. What was your “Curls Understood” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

I think that I reached that “ I got this moment” was when people started asking me for advice on how to their own natural hair. Back in college the natural hair movement was just starting and I was the only girl on campus that wore their natural hair out. Other girls wore their hair in sew-ins and wigs, but I was embracing it all. I would host events on my campus to encourage other young naturals to embrace the hair that they were born with. I even had my own natural hair column in the student newspaper which led to my YouTube channel.
