wavy hair products

Claudia Alejandra Soto is one of our Curly Ambassadors – look out for her posts over the next few months. Her wavy hair and gorgeous face drew us in immediately on Instagram. Here she shares her wavy hair products and secrets for keeping her natural hair so luscious!

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I went natural when I finally learnt how to ‘tame’ and equally embrace the curls and frizz. I have been natural for a year and a half and by that I mean, using no silly products, using oiling methods and of course being on the microfiber towel diet haha.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

I’m now trying to go even MORE natural so I am washing my hair every 4-5 days and working with crazy 3 day old curls. Which equally helps me learn which products to use and what hair styles to wear and so on… So I shampoo and deep cleanse when I do a full head of coconut oil treatments which is every other wash – so 4 days on 4 days off. When I can get away with it I will just use a nice conditioner to wash my hair and use that as a shampoo. All this depending on the state of my hair, have I been to the gym, how frizzy is it, is it dry? The weather conditions and so on…

3. What are your staple hair products?

COCONUT OIL!!! The good raw 100% unrefined stuff. Ahhh that stuff just makes me want to die and relive to appreciate it some more! My go to shampoo and conditioners are and have been since I have gone natural are all the hair products by Shea Moisture, my personal fave fave is the hibiscus and coconut one… I mean COME ON that stuff smells like fairy dust and unicorns!!!

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

Single low plait. It’s very pocahontas I feel and with that cute frizz from day 2-3 hair it’s just such a simple cute hairdo. Half head clipped with a tiny hair clip, it looks so old school like almost from victorian times but so cute, again specially when your baby hair curls are working with you :) It’s that “oh yeah i just woke up and couldn’t handle the mane” kinda cute do. Simple and so, so effective.

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!” or any essential advice you wish you had known at the beginning of your hair journey)?

Oh my goodness… the day I felt “YES DAMN IT. YES THIS IS MY REAL HAIR!” was around a year ago exactly when I was in Cuba and I got out the shower and I had my leave in conditioner in, I did my microfiber towel, threw on some shorts and a tee and i never felt prettier and happier in my life!!! My hair was bouncy and I was dressed simple and chic… We all are simple chicks deep down and that very day, that very moment I embraced my curls and hair in its crazy glory. For the first time ever I thought, “YES this is me and my HAIR is me”. And my curls from that day on get love and attention regardless of the day and time. Everyone appreciated a bouncy set of hair and us curly chicks know that “yeah i got this!” feeling once we really understand our curls.

My tip is BE YOU. APPRECIATE YOU and your curls will shine the whole way with you. Love the crazy curly hair. Basic, lifeless hair is not quite so much fun :D
