Beauty of the Week: Ruth Adewusi

afro hairstyles

If Ruth’s hair doesn’t single-handedly convince you to go or stay natural nothing will. We found Ruth on Instagram and spent over 20 mins in awe of al her fabulous photos. From the fashion to the make-up, Ruth can’t put a foot wrong! Learn how protective afro hairstyles and extensions have played a key role in her hair regimen.

1. Why did you go natural? How long have you been natural?

I went natural about 3 to 4 years ago simply because I was tired of the unnecessary breakage. After going natural I got to experience what thickness and health truly was.

2. Can you summarize your current hair regimen?

Since I am a professional natural hairstylist, I try to stick to what I use on my clients. I shampoo my hair with the Naked Moisturizing Shampoo, (good stuff) and I condition my hair with (my fav) Lucas Therapeutic Moisturizing Conditioner with tea tree oil.

3. What are your staple hair products?

One and only argan oil!

4. What are your favorite hairstyles?

I’m a weave girl! Yes I said it. I like to wear my natural hair extensions which I purchased from @Curlzworld. It blends perfectly with my hair, it’s very easy to maintain, and I use absolutely no heat!

5. For many naturals it’s a journey to fully understand their hair. It’s a process of trail and error. What was your “Curls Understood™” moment (the moment you felt like, “I’ve got this!”)?

Well when I first got my big chop, I hated my hair with a passion, it was hard and brittle. I went to the beauty supply and tried almost every single recommended hair products on youtube, and I was not satisfied whatsoever. After giving up for a few months, (wore weave) I finally found a product perfect for my hair. I came across the Kinky Curly Knot Today and the Kinky Curly Custard. I LOVED IT! They both mistrusted my hair and actually brought some curls out. NO PRODUCT, I repeat, NO PRODUCT did this.

The advice I can give to all of my new natural sisters is DON’T, I repeat DON’T go buying every product you see on blogs and YouTube. Simply go to Sephora and get free samples and see what works best for your hair. Also get your hair professionally trimmed every 2-3 months. Oh and I almost forgot, DON’T go to a hairstylist that is not used to natural hair. (You can thank me later!)
